Just get a F150 with camera in top of the tailgate.

yep. the view angle won't be awesome with the tailgate down, but you'll see something and it hopefully would be enough for unassisted reverse maneuvering.

I believe there are some that tie into tail lights for power, and then use bluetooth for video. that would be easier than pulling a/v cables under the truck to the cab.

Yeah, that is where I mounted mine when installed on my SUV. Actually almost identical location the the current camera on the Ford emblem of the Mav.

The license plate I don't think will yield good results as the OP is talking when the tailgate is down. This will make the vertical field of view very short. Like bumper of car behind you and down, knees of a person and down. Good for not running things over left behind the car in driveway, but not great for parking or other use cases of rear view.

I thought about far left or right side bumper under the tail light, but again this will shift point of view too much.

What would be ideal for this is something right at the top of the tailgate and could be rotated up when the tailgate is down.

Ford could solve this problem the way they did in the early fifties on their station wagons. The licence plate and light for it were on the tailgate and were hinged from the top dropping down when the tailgate was open. Apparently it was common in those days to load up a wagon enough to travel with the tailgate down. Same could be done with the Ford emblem on the Maverick's tailgate.
