There are two types of tie down straps that I use on a regular basis.

The easiest ones to use are the cam buckle type and they can be found at various price ranges at any kind of motorcycle or powersports shop.

I have hauled motorcycles thousands of miles in the beds of trucks and open and enclosed trailers using these tie downs. I prefer Ancra brand myself as the cams are quality and seem stouter than other brands, and as a plus they are American made.

The pros of this type are that they are very easy to tighten and loosen. You pull a loop as tight as you want/ can and that's it. To loosen, you just press down on the cam release and pull the strap through the cam.

The cons to the cam type are as follows. Quality ones can be kind of pricey. You have to check them for tightness occasionally especially if they get wet. It is difficult to get them as tight as you can with a rachet strap. They also wear over time because the cams have little teeth that bite into the strap to hold the weight.

That being said, these are my go to tie downs for 75% of my use just because they are so easy to use.

The other type that I use regularly are self retracting ratcheting tie downs from NAPA auto parts. They may sell them other places, but NAPA one are high quality tie downs.

These are also very easy to use. Hook one hook onto your tie down anchor, press a button to pull out as much strap as you need against light tension, attach to the other anchor and ratchet them tight. Press a button to release and they will retract into the body of they ratchet mechanism. No pinched fingers, no fighting with stiff wonky ratchet mechanisms. You can also get these very tight and they stay tight. They are also very compact and easy to store when not in use.

Again, quality ones can be pricey, but other than that there really aren't many down sides.

Both types come in a variety of lengths and load ratings. I try to get a load rating so that one strap can hold the entire weight, or very close to it.

If you are just getting a couple if sets for light duty or very occasion use, these types are probably overkill.

If you are hauling regularly and your payload is heavy and/or expensive buy the best tie down that will fit your needs. It is money well spent.

Regardless of what you get, inspect them before each use.

I prefer to use camlock straps for most household goods since I find they are easier and faster to deploy, release, and repack.

I reserve the ratchet straps for things that I cannot get a good pulling angle on. I prefer the 400lb light-duty ratchet straps from Harbor Freight, which are frequently on sale for $8. Heck, I've tied down motorcycles, side-by-sides, refrigerators, and ride-on lawn mowers with these and never broke or bent one.

I shy away from any other homeowner-grade ratchet straps because the huge plastic- or rubber-coated ratchet handles become obnoxious and can rub or rattle against whatever you're tying down.

I have medium-duty ratchet tie-downs, but I rarely use them.

In my experience, if whatever I'm tying down requires more than those Harbor Freight straps, it's usually a car (for which I have Mac's Tie Downs) or a tractor (for which I use chains).

Regardless, I always tie stuff down with the idea that I should be able to lose 50% of the straps and not lose the load. It basically means that I use no fewer than two. It doesn't mean that I'm expecting half the straps fall off the truck and hit the car behind me, but straps can slip off the load or otherwise lose tension while in transit.

I bought these in anticipation of my Maverick
Pricey, but they seem well made. And the self-retracting feature was the primary selling point for me - traditional ratchet straps can be a real pain to use

What? That makes zero sense. Straps are straps, they'll work with the bedside mounted tie-down points on the XL. XLT only get's the bed floor mounted D-rings.

I saw people literally using twine to tie down a new refrigerator in the back of a pickup in the home depot parking lot a few weeks ago. I almost wanted to run inside and buy them an $8 set of husky ratchet straps. I don't know what some people are thinking sometimes
