Okay, after 50 years experience, I have a solution that works. 1/3qt urethane, 1/3qt boiled linseed oil and about 1/3qt mineral spirits, add the mineral spirits to adjust the consistency to be that of primer - mix well.
I have used typical paint sprayer but have found the areasol type sprayer (that you can get at harbor freight for $20). Pour in 3/4 full and charge to 60-80psi.
Okay now the messy part - shoot everything underneath including holes and whatnot…let her drip off.
This combination of ingredients is super penetrating and then cures into a very durable finish.
My last vehicle was a 2008 ranger, just traded for my new 2023 maverick. The ranger (treated the same way) was rustless after 15 years in the Adirondacks (year round use), no refresher coats. I started this undercoat technique in 1970 with my dodge 340 dart…..no rust after 8 years (sold) also driven year round in the Adirondacks.

So, when can you do mine? 😬
Seriously, there is a shortage of shops doing this sort of thing. The nearest place to me is 50 miles away. With all the road salt in NY, you'd think there would be one on every street corner.

Link to the type of urethane you use? It's an interesting idea. Does it affect your ability to remove screws, disconnect wiring harnesses and stuff like that? Has it seemed to affect the plastics, rubber, paint or other coatings?

I used a water based rust converter I got from amazon on our old explorer and it seemed to do a pretty good job but the sprayer didn't like it and would clog. All the rusty areas turned a shiny black but it's really just to stop surface rust from turning into body rot. Once the rot starts you have to cut it out and patch it.

I never trusted the black rubberized undercoating stuff because if it starts to peel it can actually trap water and accelerate rust, not to mention that it basically glues everything together and makes repairs more difficult.

Sounds interesting I never tried that, but I have sprayed drain oil ( used motor oil) and then taken it down a nice dusty dirt road and let it coat everything then dry (98 k2500 6.5 ) has never rusted and the oil basically did the same thing by penetrating everything and then drying with the dirt coating which turns into a hard undercoat. I'll have to check out your technique when I get my Maverick which is going on the line next week unless things change 🤞

Yup, i used to use old motor oil as well, and it worked well - this was in the late 60’s and back them getting non detergent oil was no problem (used), for some reason (I can’t remember) I decided to experiment with different concoctions and came up with this one.

Minwax fast drying polyurethane - clear gloss (but I don’t think it would make a difference).

Yes, coat everything, the resulting film is thin and flexible - doesn’t attack plastic(s), hoses and wiring connections.

You are right about there being a need for this. Ah…..just not going to be me…..I’m done with automotive repair

Interesting concept but much too late for me. Plastics removed or in the case of the rocker, pried out enough to spray black wool wax into every nook and cranny. OP's concoction most likely will not adhere well over wool wax.

I would have been interested to try that concoction especially in the hidden areas where it would have saved me from pre coating those areas with bed liner first. I was looking for a one time only install in those areas.

Rust proofing is like a religion to me. Always interested in new ideas and concepts and this is one of them.

Good post OP. Kudos.

Back in the old days, aircraft’s built of tube cage frames. Builders treated the inside of steel tubing with linseed oil.

Fyi y’all take a magnet and check each panel of the truck some panels are steel some aluminum which aluminum does not rust it corrodes called aluminum oxide.aluminum oxide. Unlike rusting, this process creates a hard filmy layer over the surface that can disrupt paint quality in cars.
