There are two kind of shifters: floor shifted manual, and crap. The gap is so huge that drawing distinctions within "crap" is pointless!

Does anyone really look at a shifter, rather than doing it by feel, after the first couple of drives? Heck, I put my Crown Victoria into reverse, to back out of the garage or parking spaces, by flipping three notches to overdrive to release the parking brake, then two back, without conscious thought. I could probably still shift a bug into reverse without thinking of one, although I haven't had one in decades.

Anyway, shifting is not a conscious act. On the maverick, you spin one notch for reverse from park, or just spin for drive--it doesn't matter if you overshoot. And for parking, it's two clicks in whichever direction to change direction.

Similarly, setting parking brake should be reflexive, as would be its release.
