This regards my truck using previously Motorcraft synthetic blend oil…the 5w-30 oil.
Had 2 off oil analysis of the MC synthetic blend oil exhibiting low viscosity with shearing effect. Focus on low viscosity and shearing effects.
Question - has anyone gotten Motorcraft oil analysis reports where the viscosity is lower than what the oil specification viscosity’s range? Any reports of shear?

Based on the analysis of 2 previous oil changes of the MC synthetic blend variety, and concerns, had the last oil change switched to MC full synthetic. After a 3,2xx mile run on the full synthetic stuff, pulled sample, sent to Blackstone for an analysis. Waiting for the results. E-mailed Blackstone stating looking for viscosity and shearing effect results, in addition to metals/sealant effects. They know, aware of my concerns of the results.

Am aware Motorcraft is Conoco/Phillips lube oil. If the result of MC full synthetic reveals similar traits, will switch brands. Head scratcher….which brand? Messy out there…Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker State. Some report excellent results with Quaker State. Mobil 1 gets lots of reviews, but it has some hic cups in its performance.

Usually low kinematic viscosity in the 2.0 Ecoboost is due to fuel dilution rather than shear. What makes you think it's shear? Keep in mind that Blackstone doesn't measure fuel dilution directly--they extrapolate dilution from kinematic viscosity and flash point. Was your flash point low?

If you're concerned about the low viscosity, pick an oil that is higher on the kinematic viscosity scale for 5w-30, like Mobil 1 or Quaker State. They both have full synthetics that meet or exceed Ford spec. I'm currently running Quaker State FS for the same reason and will have a report this fall.

The sample reports I have, shows no dilution. Flash point was not low, >385.

I to have noticed that Quaker State has higher kinematic viscosity range. As for Mobil 1, I deem it to be problematic. Others on the WWW seem to have high regards of Quaker State. Not that it matters, Quaker State own by Shell. And Pennzoil brand.

Yes, they are both Shell products but clearly they aren't the same oil.

Is your viscosity lower than 5w-20 range? If not, I don't think you have much to be concerned about. Ford increased the original 5w-20 viscosity spec on the 2.0 to 5w-30 for this reason.

Many oils sheer out of grade. This isn't that uncommon. Are you doing a lot of short tripping? GDI boosted engines are hard on oil. Check out the Motor Oil Geek on Youtube. The oil you might find useful is the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV formula. It seemed to have pretty good resistance to sheer.

I think it’s $35. You can check their online site for info. I been using them for 13+ years. On my old F250 diesel, our Escape and now the Maverick. For me, I use them for first 5-7,000 miles to see how engine wears, how the lube oil performs, to a baseline when to stop sampling.
At the moment, doing a sample of Current MC full synthetic oil is reforming well, especially in viscosity, shear level.

Would you be so kind to share the future report. I am interested to learn what the QS lube oil performs. Thanks!

I’ve had very good reports with amsoil.
but because of the heat and the fact I have to tow a few decent loads in this heat. I just did my last oil change with amsoil 5w50. Doesn’t seem to have affected my mpg any noticeable difference. Also oil pressure seems consistent with what it was even at start up. I’ll pull report after using this and then back to 5w30 for the colder months

It was $35 - Blackstone increased the price for standard oil analysis to $40 a couple months ago. They have a price list on their web site.

Amsoil is one of the best oils out there. Penzoil Ultra Platinum (not plain platinum, although it is good) is also very highly rated.

Why even mess with the synthetic blend? You’ve wasted more money on the analysis than you would have just using a full synthetic from the start.

Thanks. Just wasn’t sure if their prices lately. Everything going up. Even getting my hair cut price!
