It's also an extra place for moisture to get in.
It is a dry heat down here in Tucson AZ. Most folks get more rain in 2 weeks than I get all year. Dust is a different story though. Extra place for dust to get in. But a dusty turbo is a cooler turbo. Dust will act as micro heat sinks covering the turbo. I also also monitor my air filters constantly down here:)

Can't we all just agree that these are more about form than function?

Nope. There’s about 25% of readers here that truly believe these vents make a significant difference in under hood temperatures. And the more they discuss it, the more fervently they believe it.

Sorry, but it is NOT a "functional vent." It is a functional assembly cover not a vent. You should remove the hood and fenders so ALL engine heat escapes. That would be a functional air vents. Again not criticizing your choice of adding them just pointing out it was never designed to be a vent.
I agree the the cutout was not designed to be a vent. The folks at Air Design turned it into one. Bread was not designed to create penicillin…

Remove the hood? Now youre just being silly. Although I do open my hood in the Winter to heat my garage:)

The OE ones that I cut-up and modified were purely done for a different look, and as a fun little project. The fact that they might vent a bit of hot air from underhood is just an added a bonus. If I was really worried about underhood heat, the hood would be cut-up; the RS-style vents in my ST's hood vent a bunch of hot air, and the open area of those is about 24 square inches each.

I tried to buy these online from the official Ford Accessories page - to get the 15% discount & free shipping to my dealer. But the site does not let you pick an AZ dealer hmmm.

I went to my dealer and they told me Arizona residents are not allowed to buy online from Ford! They would not honor the Ford discount either & the vents were on back order for another customer who placed the order back in March.

Instead of ordering & waiting - I found them online at a SoCal outfit for $177 plus shipping plus tax was $215 to my door.

I’m thinking the SoCal outfit is a shell company for the Sinaloa Drug Cartel where Ford gives them product in exchange for “protection” at the Hermosillo factory. The Air Design (Ford Supplier) markings were removed & QC decals from the SoCal outfit attached (see pic):

If ICE reads this post - I’m kidding!!!!

Don’t give me (and my saw) any ideas. Ford/Air Design offer a nice looking hood scoop for the Maverick that I’m eyeing…

Only pic handy of the afore mentioned RS vents. This is from Carlisle 2023. I just replaced them with a set of carbon fiber-dipped ones since the black ones in pic started delaminating.

Then why does every other model of truck, non xl, built by Ford have a functional vent in the same place as the Maverick........🤔🤣✌
