(1) Does the power to the OBD2 turn off when you turn the truck off? Pretty sure it does just looking for confirmation from someone who knows for sure.

(2) What is the default time for power to automatically turn off to the OBD2?

It never turns off, its a direct connection to the battery junction box
Just a fuse between OBD2 connector & battery

I agree with Quest that I also believe it is always live.

I plug in my dual dash cam through the OBD II and it works great.

Cheers,

Andy

Um.... it seems to go to "sleep" after about 30 seconds of key-off. Sometimes I can wake it up. Sometimes I can't.

Unlocking the doors with the keyfob and/or opening the driver's door wakes mine up.

The power wire may remain hot. Not sure. But it stops sending data in about 30 seconds after key is off.

Remember you are in constant battery saver mode - effects the OBD also.

Mine is same as yours as far as data - scanner complains no connection to truck after 15-30 sec of key to Accessory.
But BT connection is still up between phone/adapter.
My adapter will keep the green light on though until door opens currently.

If Voltage is high, it'll be on after I close and lock up - but then it has it's own low-power mode when no data activity from truck, and eventually sleep mode turns on and light off.

Some low volt mornings it takes 10-15 sec for it to wake up, and even then no truck communication until key to On. Sometimes Acc is enough to get some data for a short period, but I have to go to On or start it pretty quick.

We only use the OBD II port for powering our camera but not for data logging in any way.

When we arrive at home I automatically unplug the cord from the camera and plug it back in when we leave again, just to make sure the camera doesn't suddenly start draining the battery. We don't need the camera to wake up and record in our garage.

When we are out and I am not waiting in the truck, the camera is still active and if anything happens while we are away, it should capture some useful video for us.

Our above cameras have a sensor to come on if struck while we are away,

Normally you need to hardwire them in but I think this works as well depending on the manual switch selection on the OBD device (I have a spare just in case either OBD in our camper van or truck fails that i have an instant replacement.

Data logging shutting down after turning of the truck makes sense as well.

Here are pics of my spare OBD device for those who may be learning about them reading this post.

Have a good one,

Andy

Thank all!
gzebrick: great stuff,
(1) Are you using it with car-play?
(2) Dose it automatically reconnect when you start your vehicle?

I'm using the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app with the Veepeak dongle, it has a small blue LED that flash's wen it’s on/in use & I think it go's off after the standard shut down time. I will have to double check that edit post.

Mine.

Almost curious now if some of my truck sleep mode higher avg mA readings (60-80 mA) during shorter stops (30min) , is this device turning back on while truck is doing it's intermittent checks, causing data to be seen at the port.
I figured it was the ACCM issue occurring briefly into sleep mode to be logged there, but maybe it's this waking back up.
I'll have to start unplugging it to see. Not enough to drain a battery overnight by a long shot even if enabled the whole time, but still a system (device) that could have it's own ability to flake out and not do what it claims.

1. Yes. I use the free version of "Car Scanner" - the app itself has cool graphics but on CarPlay the dashboards are only 8 lines of text. Works fine though. Quick updated.
2. The carplay app has a "connect" button so if you close the app, you need to re-connect. It's minor. M don't use it all the time, but it's there on the sceen if I want it (I usually have a WAZE map on my CarPlay screen.

Again great stuff guys.
Vgate iCar Pro model number iCar Pro 2S BLE- Android, iOS, Windows
Operating System Android, iOS, Windows
Consumes as low as 3mA when sleeping, which helps save car battery power. Additionally, it supports remote wake-up and auto sleep functions for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Vgate vLinker model number ‎vLinker FD BT3.0 Operating System Android & Windows ONLY
Vgate vLinker model number vLinker FD BLE4.0 Operating System Android & iOS & Windows
Both: automatic sleep in idle state, sleep current is as low as 3mA.

VeePeak OBDCeck BLE+ Version v4.1224
(EDIT 1-12) [email protected]
The device will power on as long as it’s plugged in, and there will be a small draw (about 35mA). If the vehicle will be parked for more than a week, unplugging the scanner is recommended to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

VeePeak OBD2 Manual: connector is always powered for most vehicles. As it uses low energy Bluetooth, you can leave the device plugged in from days to 3 weeks depending on the battery condition.
However, it's always recommended to remove it when it's not in use.
