There is literally a hard button for turning the screen off right under the screen itself. To the right.

Yes you can still control the HVAC.

The rectangle with a line through it is the button to turn the screen off. Press it once to get just the date and time on screen and a second to turn it off.

Climate controls are manual knobs and buttons further down below the screen. You don't set that on the screen.

Plus, the newer Mavericks don't have the temperate setting showing on the dials anymore. Now, the set temperature only shows on the center display.
