Just got my maverick xlt. And I have already had two people tell me that when they call me and I am on the freeway that the car phone sounds terrible. And that it sounds like I am driving with the window down. When I am in town it seems to be fine. I don’t have this problem with my Bronco sport. Just wondering if anyone else has had this complaint. Or if mine is bad.

breath through your "NOSE" and don't hyperventilate while driving your new Maverick!🤗
Is your phone connected through trucks wifi or it's normal cell towers?

Mine works fine. Maybe your mic is loose and the vibrations are causing the noise.

Haha. The phone is connected through my phone carrier. I have had it connected though the usb and through Bluetooth. It doesn’t seem to make a difference. But it is only when I am at freeway speeds. I was wondering if air is coming in somewhere in the A pillar. Or if it is just a crappy setup.
i will have to try the cars WiFi and see if it is different.

And you have tried it at freeway speeds? Next time you are on the freeway ask someone on the phone what it sounds like. I have had only 2 people say something. So I had my wife call me and she said it sounds terrible. But I will check and see if it is lose.

Try holding phone on right side of head leaning away from window for quick air leak check. (Close moon roof?🤗). Turn things off one at a time?? Only at highway speeds is interesting. How old is phone and carrier? Some carriers are repurposing frequencies so some cell phones using certain frequencies don't work as well as used to. I have also noticed more internet problems for couple weeks.

It is a xlt with fx4 package. Stock tires with 200 miles on it.

It is not my phone that is the problem. It is when it is running through the car phone. I can hear the other person fine. But they can’t hear me well. When I disconnect my phone from the car phone and go to speaker phone on my phone then the noise stops and the person on the other end says it is fine now. So it has to be in the little microphone in the A pillar.

Ok is there a sensitivity (volume) setting for that speaker? I am assuming if you use wife's phone it would be the same. If so check with dealer! I do not ever use those functions, so I am no help 😂

I get the same complaints at highway speeds, but only on rough or permeable asphalt, when I transition to concrete, such as leaving the state hwy and going onto a tollway, my callers tell me it is instantly clear as a bell.

My cabin noise drops about 8db from the rough asphalt to smooth concrete @ 75 mph.

Gonna check the mic mounting and see what I can tell from there, if anything

Here is what I found - the mic is a press fit in a fairly crude hole in the headliner:

Ignore the zip-tie, just used it to prevent the wiring from falling into the a pillar.

The mic just clips to the grill, and mine was only partially snapped in. I found that even fully snapped in the mic was still loose and would rattle around a bit. Also I found the fabric covering the mic was not installed correctly as it was creased and had gaps on the edges, inside the mic assembly was some headliner lint and dust, and in the plug socket were strings of silicone across the pins likely from whatever supplier makes the mic:

I carefully lifted the rubber grommet, then carefully removed and replaced the fabric after clean8ng all the lint and dust out, getting a full tight seal and no creases. I reassembled and finally I split a length of F4 tape and wrapped tightly through the gray grill clips getting a tight no wobble assembly:

The space behind the mounting hole is just m/t space, nothing back there excepting the air bag materials on either side of the hole. I reinstalled mine and got a tight fit back into the headliner.

Time will tell if this helps, I may pop it back out and stuff some lightweight insulation in there , but for now it is back to stock.

Thoughts?

Very cool. Thank you for the detailed report. Let me know if it makes any changes. I will have to try it on mine.
