Can a F1 driver stop a F1 car w/o ABS shorter than an F1 car with ABS?

ABS was first developed for aircraft in the 30's to keep them on the runway,I had a 99 Nissan pickup with 4 wheel abs,that was dangerous to drive in the "slick" because of increased stopping distance-Now I was so conflicted about the hype,I decided to do a little test one day with 6 inches of wet snow,I selected a stretch of road,level and straight,full brake 30 mph,brrrrr! the brake pedal slapping my foot scarcely slowing down,I thought well lets make this interesting I speedup to 40 mph and modulated the brake pedal,the sumbitch stopped quicker! I had noticed on a bridge with icy patches that thing refused to stop at least it skidded in a straight line( the true purpose of ABS,people actually need driving school rather then technical fixes.

I don't know what Qualifies for Driving Schools these days... If People EVEN DO such a thing these days...

I think ABS would add weight & complexity to a F1 car? Especially the latest generation that uses regenerative braking. ABS would probably piss the drivers off even more.

That article you linked proves my point. A semi pro without ABS stopped quicker than some semi dude…123ft vs 127ft.

You'll have to go back to the early 1990's F1 car with ABS to be sure, it was banned in 1993 along with traction control. They took ABS and traction control away because it was felt it made braking too easy for the drivers. Weight and braking distance were not the driving factor behind the decision.

And they banned CVT’s because they felt they were too fast

Look, all I’m saying is a current F1 professional driver can stop without ABS quicker than any civilian with ABS. Especially a Maverick lol. Would be much closer or maybe a ties with a $200k Porsche however.

Of course they do, they have huge carbon brakes, plus bigger, wider, slick, stickier tires, and weigh less than the Maverick.

On a street vehicle, where most drivers are basically clueless about how to brake properly, ABS is a good thing.

I’m saying a F1 driver on a Maverick without ABS can easily out stop any of us with ABS.

ABS would be obsolete on a modern F1 car because of all the advances in tires & brake compounds etc. ABS would probably slow them down now compared to the 1990’s.

Debatable, but I see no point in arguing about something as pointless as this. If you want to prove it, if you brake properly ABS will never come on.

Ah. Maybe I missed your point. I was referring to the racer improving his non-ABS stop with ABS.

ABS would probably slow them down now compared to the 1990’s.

ABS improves braking distances on smooth pavement because it increases static friction by not allowing the tire to skip when the peak friction limit is reached. Essentially, the tire bunches up and then jumps forward in rapid succession losing surface contact frequently; ABS will allow the wheel to roll thus keeping it in contact with the surface.

This is counter-productive on loose material like snow, gravel, and grass because the surface is essentially skipping under the tire the entire time and ABS increases stopping distances in these conditions.

But the entire purpose of ABS is to allow steering while heavily braking. Any change in braking performance is incidental to that.

I remember an anecdote about(it was either about carbon or ceramic brakes)a driver wrecked a Corvette racer(I think it was) He didn't know you had to get these things really hot to effectiv have breaking effect,his cold brakes had little friction.

not the only thing that was banned in F1,the turbine powered cars ran away from the field so they restricted the air intake so much on the turbine powered cars,they effectively banned them( I see a trend here,what about the cars with 4 wheels on the front?)
