Once you change the code, the code from the factory is not longer valid and can't not be used again.
Who told you that? The factory code on that card is hard coded to the body control module. You can add a personal code on top of the factory code, but that factory code can't be changed or deactivated without replacing the body control module.

On that same note, the 5 digit factory code will be on a sticker, somewhere on that BCM (possibly on the back, I haven't had to dig for one for a Maverick yet).

Factory code will always work.

There is usually a box in the foot well with the code printed on it. Every Ford I've owned with the keypad has had it.

My factory code card was included with the manual, shrink wrapped together. I forgot about my keypad until reading this thread. Good to know about the factory code always being active. I intend to memorize it despite setting up my own code.

Any Ford dealer will be able to pull the code from the computer.
So can anyone with forscan.

When I bought my previous vehicle ( 2009 Mercury Sable) from a Honda dealership, it took 2 trips to the Ford dealer to get it's code. ( They wrote down a 7 where there should've been a one. And I hadn't even heard of forscan at that point)
Once I had it, I printed that code out with my label maker and put it inside the trunk lid.

I don't think that is correct.

It wasn't on my '09 sable, or moms '09 Taurus...

It's not always in the foot well, could be in the trunk behind a panel, under seat, or in the case of the sable/Taurus, it was supposed to be on the inner side of the passenger fuse box.

Uh, no, not true. That's the master code. That's the code you would use to add more custom codes... Or you can simply use that code to unlock the door.

Yah, don't you love it when someone confidently says something completely wrong with no evidence behind it? lol

It's even worse when people blindly follow.

I'm glad everyone jumped in to correct him so hopefully OP doesn't think that's true.

OMG, please tell me none of this crap is needed if you buy a base hybrid XL. I just want to use a normal key without memorizing a 37 digit number while dancing a Navajo Rain Dance, and reciting a Joyce Kilmer poem.
