It's not an illusion. Curved seat stays are "supposed" to be slightly more compliant than straight ones. I don't know if that is true or just marketing, but I kind of like the look. Back when I was working I thought about having some strain sensitive material applied (brittle coating, strain gauge) to see if the stays actually flexed when riding but it was never high enough on my to do list.
