***UPDATE

Hi All, I wanted to thank everyone for their advice and also provide an update.

I was told the compressor failed and this caused the truck to stall with no AC. Ford was kind enough to hook me up with a rental. The truck just got fixed last week.

I ended up selling my truck back to the dealer for about $1,200 more than what I paid. I decided to take the deal. Gym and grocery store is biking distance...and that money will be used to go back to school.

Thanks again and if you ever have issues while under warranty...demand a rental if they do not offer one.

OG Post:

Hi Everyone, I am calling upon the forums for some wisdom.

I picked up a black ford maverick tremor last December and love this truck. It was my first ever new vehicle and I simply love to drive it. First ever power windows and locks!

At around 6,888 miles, I was pulling out of the grocery parking lot towards the main road, and I heard a screeching noise, then all of the sudden my truck stalled. I restarted immediately and tried to back out, back into the plaza instead of out onto the main street where I was initially headed. The truck stalled again, and luckily there was no one behind me and I was able to coast into a parking spot.

I was able to drive home with no more stalling, but now the AC only blows hot air. I was told I needed to take it to the dealership as to not void the warranty, so I waited 3 weeks for an open slot. I drove it sparingly in the meantime as I was worried about more stalling. No AC in PHX, AZ heat is also rather unpleasant.

The service center came to my house and picked up my truck which was nice. I warned the guy about the stalling. I was told a few days later that the compressor locked up and the part to fix it is on back order. They said they made an emergency order, and we are waiting for that to come in.

The dealership service center said they made a reservation for a rental in the meantime with enterprise, and it HAD to be a ford vehicle.
I uber to enterprise, and for some reason they don't have any fords (despite being told by dealership service center about a reservation waiting for me) and I was unable to get a rental. No local enterprise has fords on their lots for rent (I call daily) and surprisingly their systems do not allow them to see when a ford is due back in (which blew my mind).

Unfortunately, I do not have the extra cash to just pay out of pocket for a rental for an indefinite amount of time while my truck gets fixed.

I explained to the dealer service center that the rental company they utilize does not seem to have the approved vehicles for me to rent (FORD ONLY). I explained that I have been ubering around in the meantime for the last week, and no solution was offered other than to wait until enterprise gets a ford in. Again, enterprise systems do not allow them to see when a ford is due back in, so this requires a daily call (hellow yew, its me again!).

Here are my thoughts:

1. this is my first new vehicle, so I don't know if this is normal...but I was hoping to get a little further into the miles before an issue arose. I can deal with no AC, but the stalling issue doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies when driving around the family. Should I be worried that this issue (so soon) may be a sign of what to expect later down the road AFTER the warranty expires? I think I was one of the first to get my tremor..was it maybe rushed or something?

2. The wait time for repair is understandable, I get it. However, I am feeling pretty frustrated that the rental company the dealership designated for me to use doesn't even carry the vehicles I can rent under their policy. After explaining the situation, there was no other solution offered (EX: exception to go ahead and rent a more available vehicle instead).

3. while under warranty for a new vehicle, is it normal for a customer to be without transportation while the vehicle is getting fixed for an unknown amount of time? I feel like I am getting screwed, but I could be overreacting because this is new territory for me. Is this just part of the new car game and I need to get over it?

What would you do? Would maybe my insurance company cover a rental for this, even though there was no accident? Thanks for your valued insights!

I seriously doubt that the A/C compressor on the Tremor is any different from all other Mavericks so it's more likely you just happened to get a bad one. As for the rental car situation, I'd be suspicious that the dealer has found a way to look like they are trying to help without actually having to pay for anything. It's also fairly common for people to not get loaners when their vehicle is out of commission.

I'd have a conversation with the dealer about the "only Ford" rule leaving you without transportation and ask whose rule it is and who has the power to waive it.

The dealership Required or requested a Ford? There are lots of Enterprise Rental locations in the valley so I dont understand why a car can't be moved from one location to another or why you cant go to another location. As to the stalling, it was caused by the failing A/C compressor. I assume that you don't have a Hybrid. When my F-150 was in for repairs Enterprise supplied me with a Tahoe. It was 2 years old and one the biggest piles of S**t I have driven. I mentioned to my local dealer that driving that Tahoe would turn any customer away from GM.

I think other members have had luck by contacting ford customer support or DM’ing the @Ford Motor Company account on here to escalate/cut through weird dealer policies

So sorry about your luck. My wife’s CX-5 had to get a new transmission and our Mazda dealer had a loaner ready to go. Whenever I had to take my Mercedes to the dealer for work they always had a loaner for me no questions asked. I was under the impression the benefit of service at the dealer was getting a loaner. But maybe not or just with more upmarket brands?

There was another member here who’s dealer gave him an f150 off the lot as a loaner. I don’t see why your dealer couldn’t give you SOMETHING unless they’re just being stingy

Sorry about your situation and totally understand not being able to fork over loads of cash for a rental while waiting for reimbursement. You shouldn't have to.

I'd definitley be making some calls above the dealerships head directly to FORD about that situation. The whole loaner things is just ridiculous now days. Just a couple years ago it was not an issue at all, and when I traded in a Subaru for a FORD, the dealer told me they don't do loaners at all and made some BS excuse kind of like what you are getting. Basically they would "try" to help. Meanwhile, from the Toyota dealership owned by the same person I was given a loaner 3 times no questions, no haggle, nothing. Just "here ya go". Same with previous RAM trucks I had. The chances of that dealership being owned by someone who owns multiple other dealerships in the area are VERY high, and they should have loaners on hand across the board regardless of what brand they are.

There really is no good reason they cannot provide you with a loaner while your vehicle is having warranty work done especially in the initial warranty period.

Hopefully someone can chime in here with a phone number so you can get your situation handled immediately (although, you'll likely have to wait until Monday).

Thank you for the feedback! Glad to know loaners or rentals are expected in these situations. That gives me the confidence to be more "persistent" if need be when I call in again Monday. I will Let you know how this plays out!

Got a loaner through Enterprise when my Mav was at the dealer for some extensive warranty work. It was a Toyota and I had it for 5 weeks.

Not normal, they should have taken it in before waiting if you were unable to safely drive it in the first place. Once they knew it would be overnight (and then some) they should have gotten a rental for you. Since they came and got it, i would believe they should have dropped off the loaner/rental or wherever they normally go through (dealerships here in michigan have them, rarely have to go to rental place).

If the air conditioner on the eco boost engine is belt driven and it is seized up, maybe that is what is causing it to stall. There is a clutch on the front of the compressor and that would have to be engaged or damaged to the extent it won't turn anymore. You should have probably shredded the belt in any case.
BTW, I just did a search for "Ford MAverick 2.o air conditioning compressor." and found one for $202.00 at Lakeland Ford, in Lakeland, FL.
It does fit other models too.

If the stalling issue only happens while using AC, I would keep driving the truck without AC while you wait for a part.

As mentioned by RCollins, if the AC clutch failed, you would've wiped the belt, and had other issues, so make sure it's not the AC clutch, and your belt is OK. If so, unplug the AC harness at the compressor, and keep driving.

When asked, this is why an extended warranty is needed during the original warranty period,” rental from first day “ coverage. I’ve not seen where it says “Ford vehicles only”on my contract. Also if your serpentine belt was squealing and the ac pulley or clutch was frozen, the vehicle should not be driven, given the vehicle has stalled out on multiple occasions and that belt may be stressed. Bad things can come in threes if caution is not considered. Two cents worth.

The OP lives in the Phoenix AZ area. Trust me it has been too &$@( HOT to drive a car without working A/C on the highway during rush hour. Also its not just change the compressor. If the compressor failed then the whole ac system has been contaminated with metal.

That is correct. The compressor needs replaced along with the receiver/dryer and the whole system needs flushed clear of any debris (good luck with that.) Then the tech will need to vacuum pump the system down to 30 inches, wait at least a half hour to see if any leaks are indicated, then service the system with the proper amount of coolant and lubricating oil.
