I have a map of my state in the truck and all six states touching Iowa. Also have a US Atlas in the truck. For any long trip, I print out a Google Maps of the route.
Overkill? Paper beats electrons every day of the week.
There are times that you can't depend on technology.
My Atlas and maps never lose a connection, overheat, break, run out of battery power. In an emergency maps or road atlas, can be used to start a fire. Starting with whatever state you don't like first.
I still like my Garmin and my phone. They have their place.
True, the Garmin doesn't look fancy and built in, but it doesn't cost $800.
Side story
My niece's boyfriend who relied on his phone to take him in between towns in Central Nevada. His phone ended up directing him down a 5 mile paved road, that turn to a 30 mile dirt road. With no cell phone service.
I got him a Road Atlas for Christmas.
He demonstrates and sells police equipment around the country including Alaska he carries his Road Atlas with in his luggage now.

I still remember routinely navigating across the USA in the 1970s using nothing more than a piece of scrap notebook paper with lines and route numbers and a destination address scribbled on it. As a starving college student, I couldn't afford AAA or a road atlas. Today it seems like I can't get to the grocery store if I'm not handheld by my GPS.

Also people have swapped in SYNC3 and even SYNC4 to the Maverick XL and XLT with Navigation.
Where do you get these? In my 24 XLT I'm also using Android Auto but I also have a top of the line Garmin Nav system. It is needed to plot routes for my pool cleaning.

Just as recently as the 4th of July going to the Grand Canyon there are areas out there that have no cell phone signal that means no Google Maps. Garmin and the road atlas to the rescue.
When my wife and I were at the Watchtower there was no cell phone service and we were going to split up and explore different areas. We use our small family service walkie talkies to keep in touch. Me and Maya explore the trails while my wife goes into the shops.

I wouldn't bother adding the Ford Nav.

Waze, Google, etc... offer better navigation apps, for free. Only drawback is the tiny phone screen.

Glen, With Google Maps there is an option to download map files of the area prior, if you believe cell phone signal may be an issue. Not much good if you don't know ahead, though. Waze doesn't have that option.

I use a similair app called On X for snowmobiling, and download the maps ahead of time, since cell phone signal is often an issue out in the woods. I won't say it better than Garmin, but it does atleast work.

I had no idea they had no cell reception in parts of the Grand Canyon or areas around it on the res.
I guess I don't understand the google advantage.
Having to check if I have cell signal along my travel route or destination is one more thing to do before leaving on the trip. Seems like more trouble than it is worth, when everything is already downloaded in the Road Atlas, maps or my Garmin. There is also the fact that,
I do not have an unlimited data plan. 👇👇👇

I've downloaded the entire SE US & several other states on google Offline Maps. I guess you could download the entire US if you wanted to. It's in the maps app Settings, under Offline Maps. Google will also periodically automatically update the maps if you enable that feature, but only if you're on a Wi-Fi connection.

You can navigate using the app with no mobile service available, as long as you have GPS location enabled. Of course you do not get live traffic overlays. And it will auto-switch to Offline mode in rural areas, if you lose your mobile data connection.

I like the fact it can auto-updates maps periodically. I drive to a very high growth area frequently, and having current maps really helps.
