First saw and really found out about the Maverick a little over a year ago, fall of 2021, when shopping for a vehicle for my wife. Didn't really give it much thought to wanting one for myself at the time though. I had a full size truck I use for work or play, and at the time that truck was a 2018 F150 with the 2.7 EcoBoost.... And that little 2.7 in the F150 is amazingly good, tons of power and amazing MPG, easily getting 24-25 mpg on the highway. I also had a 2017 Ford Fusion Sport, with a hitch, that I used for errands or trips where I didn't need or want to drive the truck, plus I towed with the car a lot too. Car was fun as it was quite a little hot rod with the same 2.7 turbo engine as my truck had.
Over the winter of 2021-2022 I decided I wanted to upgrade our camper at some point in 2022 and wanted a bigger truck to handle a big camper, so ordered a F250 and waited about 3 months for it to come in and sold the F150. The new truck, a 2022 F250 is a gasser and its a beast. Amazing truck, super powerful and capable but wow does it like to burn some gas! It gets 14-15 mpg on the highway if not towing, but around town and mixed use ( towing, not towing ) its 8-10 mpg where the F150 was far far better on mpg than this thing. But it is what it is, I needed this pig if I was going to get a bigger camper, which we did a few months ago.
I made the decision that I actually would enjoy owning a maverick, in place of my Fusion. I came to that decision actually pretty early into 2022, but by that point the order banks were closed for 2022 mavericks. I watched online listings and whatnot and saw all the for sale ones with 5-10 grand of mark up and said no way am I doing that. I just waited for order banks to reopen, and once they did I put in orders for what I wanted. I went to the dealer and ordered a XLT hybrid and a Lariat hybrid... would prefer the lariat, but would be satisfied with the XLT, so ordered one of each in case one is built sooner than the other or in case only one is built at all.
Now all along, I knew from reading on the FB pages and forums like this one, and from what I experienced ordering and following other peoples order woes with the super duty.... That I needed to have very low expectations as far as getting a maverick. That to think I would get one anytime soon would be silly, and to be prepared for a long long wait, and even be prepared that I might not get one at all. But I do have my hopes that I will likely get at least one of the mavericks I ordered by late summer or fall of this year.... I won't be mad or shocked if I don't get one by then, but I do believe that it is very possible, and I also feel that by late summer or fall it will be much easier to find a fair deal on a used one or a canceled order at a dealer without a big mark up.
So I asked around on the Fusion FB pages if anyone would be interested in my fusion.... Did it mainly because I feel like used car values are about to tank, and I wanted to cash out of that car before it loses a ton of value. To my surprise I found a few people interested and willing to pay me 20 grand for it, which is what I actually paid for it when I bought it in summer of 2020. So it sold and I was down to just my truck.
I figured I would buy a cheap car or SUV to replace the fusion with to hold me over for a few months or a year or however long it took to find a fair deal on a maverick or till one I ordered came in. Was looking at older Toyota Prius', older camry's, older CRV's, even several VW jettas and passats.... Essentially just wanted to find something with a good bit of life left in it, that wasn't a gas hog, and I could pick up for 6-10 grand. My thoughts were, even as used car values fall, the " Cheap " used cars won't lose nearly as much as the more expensive ones. If I could score a decent $6500 Jetta for example, even if values drop 20 percent, it will only lose $1300.... where as if I bought a $15,000 used whatever, it could lose $3000. And I don't think a $6500 car will lose 20 percent as easily as a 15-25 grand car might. So that was my plan.
I was doing a good bit of internet shopping and even went and looked at a few cars over a period of about a week or two after selling my Fusion and my wife came to me and made a proposal. See, a year earlier we bought her a " new " car to replace her aging Sienna minivan. We looked at a lot of midsize SUV's, including the highlander and Pilot, Ford explorer, even the VW Tiguan.... because that was what she wanted.... And ended up settling on a 2019 Mazda CX9. She really wanted the highlander the most, but with prices at their peak and a 32-34 grand max budget, the Mazda was a few years newer and less miles and more loaded than any highlander we could find. She was semi happy with it at the time we bought it, but wasn't long before she started second guessing her choice. She HATED the styling of the Mazda.... Some people like myself are more into the mechanical aspects of a vehicle or the features etc... others are more about how a vehicle simply looks. MY wife is mostly all about looks and really doesn't care about the mechanical aspects. So for the last year now she has drove the Mazda but not been happy about it. So she made the proposal that we look again at Highlanders and pilots and maybe buy her one and I will take over the Mazda as my 2nd car till the maverick comes in.
So we did some shopping around, and thanks to prices starting to fall, we were able to find a decent deal on a highlander. We could have replaced the Mazda with a 2019 highlander with similar miles to the Mazda ( 55K ) for about 30-32 grand ( a year ago when we bought the Mazda those same highlanders would have been 36-38 grand ) but we ended up picking out a 2017 we found that had more options than the XLE's we had been looking at, because the 2017 was identical and had super low miles ( low 30's ) and was in mint condition, clearly well taken care of and stored in a garage. So now the wife got what she wanted all along, a super nice highlander, in her budget, and I took over the Mazda.
The Mazda has really depreciated a lot since we bought it. We paid around 30 grand for it in Nov of 2021, and today its worth around 23 grand. It will likely depreciate some more over the next several months as I wait on a maverick, so not as smart of a move financially as my plan was of buying a $6500 Jetta or Civic or whatever.... But having not really driven the Mazda much since we got it, since it was the wifes and we usually drove my Fusion if we were going places together, and now driving it a lot over the last week since we got her the highlander..... This Mazda is DAMN NICE! I really like this thing. I actually like the styling a lot, and I like the torque of the turbo engine, the driving dynamics and handling are good, and it has nearly every feature whistle and bell the loaded Maverick Lariat would offer..... Adaptive cruise, lane keep, blind spot with cross traffic, apple car play, heated real leather seats, etc.... And with the second row of seats folded down I could likely stuff more into the back of this thing than I could the bed of a Maverick. Even with them up, the rear hatch area is huge. I had already put a hitch on the back of it not long after we bought it, incase we ever decided to use it to tow the boat or jet skis, so I can use the 9 to tow that stuff or my motorcycle trailers etc... And MPG wise, this thing is not bad at all, I am sitting at right at 25 mpg so far with mixed city and highway driving since I took it over from the wife. I think I can get it to do even better before I run out the first tank of gas I put in it. I think I will be able to get close to if not over 30 mpg on the highway if I want to take it on a trip.
Anyway, had a little bit of spare time, thought I would share my story. I am so satisfied with the Mazda I am not as all in any rush or stress over how soon I might get my Maverick. Heck there is even possibility I might not even get the maverick at all, being how happy I am driving this Mazda. I hate that it has lost so much value since I bought it, and who knows how much more it might lose, but if you could buy one for what KBB says mine is worth.... 22-25 grand it is a hell of a lot of vehicle for the money. I know I ruffled some feathers when I suggested in another thread that for some folks who are tired of waiting on a maverick, potentially buying a Corolla would be a option.... But I made that suggestion based on someone having to have a NEW vehicle for the low to mid 20 grand price point. For that same price point, this Mazda would be more compatible to a 30-35 lariat maverick, as far as features and comforts go, and so far I think it is possibly the smarter choice.
