Am about to take delivery of my 2024 Maverick XL AWD. (in Pennsylvania) (my first Ford ever....so I don't know their system)
Two items:
1. MSRP. When I ordered the vehicle on 6 Sep 2023, the MSRP was shown as $23,400, plus $2,200 for Equip Group A and delivery/destination fee of $1,595. Have heard that MSRP has gone up. But my order price is locked....right? Do I pay what I ordered, or will I be forced to pay the higher MSRP? When I ordered the vehicle, the dealer said "we have to charge you full MSRP because you are ordering it."...and the salesman said that "the price will stay the same no matter how long it takes to deliver it (God, I wish I had that on a recording...)
2. Dealer add on fees. I know that some fees are State Required...(tax, title, and lien fees) ....no issue there....but other fees, are pure profit padding by dealers.....Dealer Prep Fee, Additional Dealer Markup, advertising fee, nitrogen air for tires, tinting, etching, theft protection, underbody coatings, paint protection, GAP insurance, Life insurance, extended warrantees, pre-paid maintenance feees, ....can I JUST SAY NO to this crap? I thought the new FTC rules would put a stop to all this bloviating?
2a. There is one semi-legit fee, so I've heard...Document Fee. The State of PA does NOT REQUIRE IT, but it does ALLOW it. I saw on Fords own website that a doc fee of $75.00 is what it should be. In PA, the state 'allows' a higher fee. Isn't this negociable?

1) Your dealer should honor the price at the time you ordered but some dealers ignore this. If it doesn't line up, just push back and say you were quoted the initial price. It's not a huge increase, I believe $500 so I don't think most dealers should put up a huge fuss over it.

2) You should be able to take off any added fees that aren't required by state. I would say it's less likely to see that stuff on a customer order vs one off the lot, but its it's there just say no.

2a) I don't know about doc fees, here in the California Republic the doc fees are limited to a strict $80. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Most dealers are pretty honest and straightforward with this stuff so hopefully you have a good experience.

I picked my 2024 Maverick XLT Tremor up from the dealer on 2/29/24 (ordered 10/25/23). Since my order they have started marking them up by $2500 but my price didn't change. I'm in Maryland and the doc fee was much higher ($500). I was able to get $200 off after telling them it was a BS fee but that was all they would do.

Yes, CA limits doc fees.......PA does not require but allows the fees...I think there is a MAX of $494, but the state's ave. is $130...here's hoping.

If you ordered your Maverick, you better call Ford, and see if you have any cash offers form Ford. They informed me that I had 3, 2× 2500.00, and 1, 2750.00. I got tired of waiting called around and found a 2024 Hybrid XL, and was able to use the 2500, and the 2750, cash offers/ rebate. Another dealer would only use the 2500.00. So I did purchase the 2024 for MSRP minus the 5250.00. What is crazy is my original order still is showing more cash offers/rebates.

The dealer can charge any add-ons they want, even on an ordered vehicle. You can try to get them removed, but the dealer can refuse to sell you the truck, if they are so inclined. Until you complete the purchase, it's their truck. Hopefully your dealer won't play those games. If they do, you can pay for the extras, try to negotiate them away, or walk away from the deal. Those are really your only options.

Document fees are typically capped by the state and the cap levels vary. In MA, they are capped at $299.00, as I recall, and I've not found any dealer willing to negotiate them. Sometimes you can negotiate an offset via the trade-in or sales price, but sometimes not.

My Maverick is in transit to the dealer and I touched base with them today. $495 doc fee (Unfortunately pretty standard from what I’ve seen in MS in my loan officer days, I don’t believe we have a cap). They sell new vehicles off the lot with a $695 “ceramic coating and interior protection package” but it’s optional for special orders. I declined…

There are good dealers, and downright shady ones. I have my order typed out on a retail purchase agreement. If they try to change that I would be shocked. If you didnt get something from them in writing....not sure there is much you can do?

It's a new order, not rollover. There's no private offers.

Do you know where exactly you saw this about doc fees in PA

My 2024 was a found order. 5250.00 off. Still have my 2023, now rolled to 24, ordered in 22, still on order. Cash 3 cash offers out there on it. Just saying be aware, if you have an ordered unit outstanding, and find one on a lot.

Document fees vary wildly based on the state and dealer. I'd say MOST dealers at this point try to charge a document fee. Do not listen to anyone that tells you they are "required"; this is completely false. Document fees were invented in the '80s to help dealers pad profits. End of story. There is no "risk of a discrimination lawsuit" (car buyers are not a protected class) or any other BS reason car salesmen will give you. It's the only business in the world I am aware of that explicitly attempts to get buyers to pay for operating costs.

However, in SOME states, if a dealer charges this fee, it may save you a trip to the DMV. Depending upon how much free time you have, and how much the fee is, it may be worth it to just pay the fee and avoid the hassle.

The first two dealers I reached out to here in NH each wanted $550 documentation fees, PLUS a $250 "Consumer Data Protection Fee". And THEN another $27 to fill out the title transfer (begging the question exactly what documents the "documentation fee" covers). I refused to work with either of them and found another dealer that charges $27 for the title transfer and no other fees.

copy that doc fees may be 'allowed', but they are not 'required'.
