So what’s everyone’s thoughts so far with the Maverick? Still have my Mazda3, but once again considering a Maverick.

Drive about an hour to work and a hour back about once or twice a month, so looking at a hybrid.

Have 2 younger kids in car seats and it seems the room in the back will be similar to my Mazda3, so shouldn’t be much of a change there.

Looking to get a truck and really liking the mpg on the hybrid.

My Mazda3 has been great so far. Almost 9 years old with around 91k miles and only needed regular maintenance so far. Making it hard to buy a new vehicle.

If your sticking point before was the wait time to potential build then that hasn't changed much.
It was build time and some bad reviews. But, might take a used one for a test drive and either buy that or order one.

XLT Lux package near me with 7k miles for around $30k. Same price as MSRP, which is a turnoff.

If you're not in a big hurry you could put one on order while hoping for high prices to fall as the Maverick market gets get flushed in. As one to get many miles and years from my vehicles your Mazda has a long way to go and unless you want to upgrade for newer safety features or just want a truck, I would stay with it for awhile. Put away the money you'll save for future use or investment. Unless you drive many miles per year, you will be a long time recovering from changing from a Mazda 3.

OP - we can talk up the Maverick (or talk it down) till the cows come home. But the decider ought to be you taking it for one or more test drives - with the family. Reading your decision factors, I have these thoughts...

  • The Maverick will definitely fit your family. But it won't fit your family with their luggage - there is no trunk or hatchback weather sealed storage area. Sure, you can get a bed cover - but then you basically have an SUV and you might as well have bought one in the first place.
  • The Maverick is a big vehicle compared to a Mazda 3 (see suggestion to test drive, above). It is 3" longer than a Kia Telluride, and the turning radius is 40'.
  • As somebody who owned and loved several Mazdas (3 Miatas, one RX7) and had a friend who loved his model 3s, be aware you are taking a huge step down in polish and reliability. Mazdas are jewels with wheels. Fords are not. And the Maverick is DEFINTELY not.
  • If you need a truck, but rarely, have you considered buying an old beater Ranger? You can get one dirt cheap, and it can be that second ride when you can take a beater. It kind of depends on whether you need a truck every day, or once a month.
  • Would a small trailer meet your needs instead of a truck?
  • Don't forget the Santa Cruz - except it has a smaller rear seat, and probably not a great size for child seats.
Hope this helps. My main concern on going from a Mazda 3 to a Maverick with two children is "no dry luggage space".

I was in your exact situation. I sold my basic manual trans Mazda3 and got Maverick XLT. No issues and couldn't be happier after almost 2 yrs. Maverick has more width for the kids in the back and I'm getting a hair better mileage with the Maverick. I often have 3 kids across the back with car seat in the center. Plus being able to tow trailer and haul large items in the bed.

You didn't mention if the drive to work is mostly highway or city. If highway, your mileage will still be better with the Hybrid than the ecoboost - but not enough to make much difference. But if you do mostly city driving and don't need to tow anything big, the Hybrid is fine. Just don't expect enough gas savings to make your truck payment.

If, as your username says, you can't afford a Maverick, you really shouldn't even be considering buying one. Put that money in the bank and have it for a down payment later, when you actually need a new vehicle.
Your Mazda likely has a ton of miles left on it. I've owned two and they were extremely reliable.

I have a vague suspicion that you can't afford a Maverick. I advise everyone not to buy a vehicle they can't afford, no good will come of it.

This is the information I’m looking for. Thank you both for taking the time to respond.

All jokes aside, I could afford a Maverick. Could the money be spent better somewhere else? Yes.

We have the OEM (soft) bed cover- it was $220 after using points from truck purchase. It does not leak and is a far bigger trunk than any Mazda. :D

LOVE the hybrid- my wife drives 6 miles on HILLS to work then I drive on weekends and we get 500miles from 12 gallons. It handles a little more firm than an SUV, but not uncomfortable. We LOVE LOVE being able to fill the bed with leaves/ pine needles or trash or whatever. Yes we've hauled plywood & sheetrock. And 2 kayaks in the bed (hanging out the back).

The backseat is VERY upright, not sure how comfortable car seats would be.

If you consider the Maverick a commuter car with "some" truck abilities- it's magic! :)

So, I have a family of 5. My kids are all older now (10,13 & 17). when they were in car seats I had several different vehicles. Going from the Mazda 3 to the Maverick will not be a drastic increase in size. The cabin space would be equivalent (in my head) to a Mazda CX30, Kona or HRV) small cross over. The front seats will have a little more space than the Mazdas. I would find a Maverick and see how car seats fit. My buddy has 2 car seats in his and says its kind of tight. I know installing them is not the easiest.
I also drive about the same as you. I'm around 40 miles each way. I have been averaging 39 -42 mpg in the cool weather. I would defiantly get one of the bed covers. it will make transporting a stroller and stuff much, much easier!
**I call the Maverick the "Jack of all Vehicles". It can do a little of everything! is a great size with many capabilities. More so at the Lariat trim. That is why I fell in love with it.**
I spent a lot of time researching many, many vehicles and I could not find any thing that could match the MPGs and capabilities of the Maverick. I have had mine for a little over 2 weeks. One of the best vehicles I have ever had. I have owned about 15 different vehicles in 23 years (Pontiac, Mazda, Chrysler, Honda, Hyundai) but never a truck.
The only other one that I was leaning towards was the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. just because it gets like 35 mile of all electric and can plug in. still not as much space for stuff. The Hyundai Sant Cruise is very nice and has a really nice, built in retractable, bed cover. the back seat may be better suited to car seats. You would be getting about 15 MPG on average less.
feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Just a thought to consider at this point of the MY24 orders, I’d wait for the refreshed MY25 and order when the MY25 order banks open
