Maverick is like a Flex

What was the flex all about? I could never figure out why it even existed.

Because dumb 50-something dads who can’t afford AMG super wagons end up going for what seems to be the complete opposite. I’ve had two Flex-s, the second with a twin-turbo six with awd. For driving kids around town, it was a little bonkers. Now I have the Mav (eco boost awd) and while I love having a truck, I do miss that second turbo…

always liked the Flex, nearly bought a used one to replace a Sienna minivan.. but then a friend gave me a deal on an Explorer Sport Trac (my avatar) which I have really enjoyed..
The Flex was kinda good-looking in a blunt way, comfortable and powerful to haul canoeing/hunting/boy scouts etc, a sort of buff minivan. The gas mileage isn't that much worse than a comparable minivan, used to average 19mpg in the Sienna.

Having driven the Flex, Maverick and MKT, the Maverick drives more like a truck. There are a lot of little things that add up for increasing the truck feel. Seating position, exterior mirrors, hood shape, etc.

I would love it if Ford made a maverick flex that basically made it into a 6 passenger SUV. Captain seats in the middle and two-person bench in back between the wheel wells. Keep everything else the same. (Additionally, adding in the ability to slide the 2nd row back a bit would do wonders for rear leg room if the 3rd row is folded flat)

Externally, have it look like a maverick with a bed cap. This would maintain all of the little truck things that are drawing people into the platform. It would also be one of the most affordable ways to get a solid 6 passenger vehicle for the family.

We have a 2019 Ford Flex AWD. Grey/black two tone paint with 20in wheels. I do agree dimensions are very similar. That's where the similarities end with me. The Flex is actually based off of the 2011 to 2019 Explorer and Lincoln MKT. The 3.5 285hp engine that the Flex has is tried and true ( although not a fan of the internal water pump). It is much quieter and the power is more linear. You give it gas and it just goes. Very smooth shifting transmission. Downside is an average of 21mpg with city driving and AWD. Much more interior room for the driver. Very, very flexible with interior room and seating. I've even hauled 8ft lumber and closed rear tailgate. You can fit an unbelievable amount of cargo in it and not have to worry about weather. I believe it is one of the better vehicles Ford has ever made (love or hate the styling).

I have to follow this up with that I also really enjoy my Maverick. It drives and rides great, just in a different way than the Flex. Appealing styling. I like the ability to haul sod, dirt, landscape rock, etc. I like the 29 MPG. No issues with my Mav in my first year and 12,500 miles.

To me it's a longer Bronco Sport with a bed. Rides better than the Sport (longer wheelbase) but doesn't maneuver as well (longer wheelbase).

Simple- it was a great vehicle. Would have bought another one if they had modernized it instead of killing it.

Every other wagon out has a really sloped rear which cuts into the cargo area.
The boxy shape made it the perfect hauler.
