Did great! Went to Mammoth this weekend for snowboarding with friends. Roads were icy so I put on some chains. Never felt underpowered with three people, snowy roads, and lots of gear.

That's awesome! Which chain did you go for? I'm thinking about making a purchase myself. Also, is it a chain or a cable? When I got my Maverick, I remember signing something about not using a chain, as it could void the warranty.
Thanks!

I got them from Amazon. They are labeled as a cable chain, which is confusing. However, they meet SAE Class S clearance requirements, and I personally had no issues with clearance or rubbing at all. Looking at the set, they look like cables and not traditional chains.

I bought my chains here. They clipped on very easily but does require you to drive onto the chains. Compared to more expensive, self-tightening cables my friends had, these were installed and removed faster. Label shows a top speed of 25 MPH. YMMV. I've never tried snow tires living in southern California, but at $40 these chains are perfect for my use case. If you drive more often in snowy conditions, I can see snow tires being more convenient. Chains definitely do the job super well.
Chains only seems perfect for So. Cal., I probably wouldn't want snows unless you know you'll need 'em every weekend. I don't know what it's like to drive to Mammoth, but seems like it's in the shadow of the Sierra. It certainly would be nice to be only 300 miles from Mammoth, mostly dry miles at that.
