2100 miles unloaded: 77 mph cruise control 99% interstates.
Mountain West, High Desert, Prairie Grassland.

Starting Elevation: 50 ft. ASL
Max Elevation: 7500 ft. ASL
Ending Elevation: 450 ft ASL

Low temp 27°F High Temp 80°F.
30 hours. 10% gentle heater use. 5% gentle air conditioner use.
The rest, natural ventilation only.

230 pound self. 50 pounds "stuff". 87 Octane gas only.
Slight tailwind.

Net: 33.2 MPG

Reverse trip: Same roads.
Very similar conditions.
Slight headwind.
Lowered cruise control to 72 MPH due to head wind and added weight of vehicle.

230 pound self.

1250 pounds cargo.
Truck Scale: 5180 with me inside and half a tank of fuel.

Net: 31.5 MPG

OF WORTHY NOTE:

I mostly drove in daylight.
But had pre-arranged hotel to reach. The first time I drove after dark, I quickly realized my "projector" headlamps were pointing at the sky. One hour from first hotel I dealt with it. At hotel, got out the manual, and found it is:

REALLY FAST AND EASY TO ADJUST YOUR HEADLAMP BEAM HEIGHT.

I wish all Mother Truckers would do this. A full 20% of drivers on the roads have "projector" beams pointed too high.

I had to rotate the screw EIGHT FULL REVOLUTIONS which I think was all the way down. The screw got stiff and I didn't want to force it any more. Was near perfect like this.

Side note, after 1.5 year of ownership I fully believe mine were misaligned from the factory. For 1.5 year I have believed my "high beams" didn't do anything. Because they didn't. Turns out I was driving with "high beams" all the time.

My first vehicle with projector lamps. So I thought that's just how they were. What a wonder difference now. Now I don't get blinded by reflector signs. It took a heavy load for me to notice this important FACTORY MIS ALIGNMENT issue.
Thanks for Intel Jack! I got mine on order and will try and will try and finish off my Tile installation carrier with the Maverick (down from an F150). Be interesting how I cram stuff into the Bed... Stay safe out there!

Your report was very enlightening. Plan first trip from Washington state to Dallas Texas this fall and your report was spot on. I tried to adjust headlight on my 2003 sport trac and finally gave up. These on just right. Thank you and everyone for these informative posts.

Great tip! Just wondering what they mean by "the horizontal edge of the brighter light should touch the horizontal reference line", specifically what they're referring to as the "horizontal reference line"

Hmm I feel pretty good then with my 31 mpg in my ecoboost. 2800 miles round trip to Madison, Wisconsin. Had 230 lbs of self and about 200 lbs of traveling gear, clothes, tools and bicycle.

Meant this reply to go to "inline_five":

Hybrids low 30mpg on the highway?
Maybe you, depending on how you drive and the topography of where you live.
Not me. 38-40mpg on interstate driving. If it's 65 MPH, I do 68. If it's 70MPH, I do 70. Example: Raleigh NC to Charleston SC, all (560 miles round-trip) on interstates. Got 40.1 mpg. Admittedly, it's damn flat terrain.

I’m seeing what you are mileage-wise in my hybrid. I’ve make several trips from Las Vegas to West Yellowstone,MT (750 miles) averaging ~70mph and get 38 mpg with a couple hundred pounds of cargo and a bike hanging off the back. All the states in the trip have numerous mountain passes up to 7500’. The speed limits in NV, UT, ID are 80 and half the traffic is going faster than that so I’m generally the slowest thing on the road. There is a huge difference in mileage between 70 and 80.

I was doing cruise set to 78 most of the time. Had a timeline to keep and had to do 2100 miles in 3 days.

Once upon a time they used a bullseye type device for doing that.

UPDATE:

After unloading, I then turned the screws 4 revolutions back UP.

(I had turned them 8 revolutions down while loaded.)

THIS SEEMS ABOUT RIGHT.
AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

For the first time in 1.5 years my low and high beams work as they should.

APPARENT the headlamps were set too high at the factory. If you get "flashed" by others with just your low beams, it is very likely your beams are too high.

YOU CAN FIX THIS IN 1 MINUTE!

Tip: notice the "level" of the bright line from your headlamps on the back of a truck or van in front of you. Let them pull away from you. The height of the beam should go DOWN as they pull away.

I'd say now my low beams intersect the ground about 300 feet in front of me. Before, they would go out to infinity, out into space. You don't want that!
