Nope, you have it reversed. The oil goes through the oil filter before going anywhere else. Filling the filter makes a big difference in how long before you have sufficient pressure.
I stand corrected. I've been working on radial engines too long (which are dry sump) and the oil is filtered on the way back to the oil tank once it exits the engine.

, if I recall correctly the manual mentions filling the filter with oil as part of the required amount for proper filling.
but that's the amount, not how to do it.

I assume that is to account for the different amount of oil needed depending upon whether you change the filter, or keep the old one with some oil in it.

My '93 Fleetwood offered two amounts of transmission fluid, depending upon whether or not the torque converter was overhauled--but that doesn't mean to fill the torque converter before remounting!

getting back to oil, I have the bad habit, when using full synthetic, of briefly spinning the starting motor with the filter off after it finishes draining.

Why keep using the old filter? That's not a good idea in the first place.

oh, I absolutely agree. But it's downright common to find two different oil fill numbers depending upon whether you replace the filter or not. (apparently, some service plants call for only doing the filter every other change!).

But given the nominal cost of a filter. compared to good oil and the labor involved, it's silly not to.

Especially when you get to something like the Northstar, which really only uses 5 pts, but wants 7.5 full, just to make sure there's enough while banking!

For crying out loud, if your engine is pushing that hard, pay fro a filter which only costs a quart or two of good oil, anyway!

Filling the filter, or not, we are off topic. There usually is a low pressure warning light activated after an oil change for the brief one to two seconds it takes the engine to fill the filter. Where is that oil pressure warning on the Maverick. Its not an idiot light, so is it in the program on the dash displace, like the low tire pressure warning.
Mmmm, you will not get a low oil pressure light from the situation you are describing.

When I did oil changes at a gas station as a teenager, I was taught to run some oil over the gasket with my finger but we never poured oil into the filter.
