Depends. Which engine do you have?

Why not use the original oem size?

No, you will not have a problem with the FL400S.

There are NO reasons to use a larger filter.
Incorrect. Amazon sells the FL-910-S for $8.72, while they sell the larger FL-400-S for only $8.44.

Edit to add: Using the larger filter also gets to a lot closer to being able to dump 6 quarts in there instead of 5.5. Not naming names, but some have even been known to just dump 6 in so they don't have to keep half of a quart lying around.....

Overfilling the engine oil is NOT a good thing. Who cares about 28 cents. Use either one you prefer. I'll stick with the 910-s since its given in the manual

Half a quart left over is just half a quart u won’t need to use the next time and then the time after that u will have an extra quart lying around u won’t have to buy.
I agree with OFG, if it asks for 5.5 that’s what should be in there. If something happens they might just void warranty repairs if they see the wrong size filter and excessive oil.
Just my opinion

Why not just buy oil in the 5 quart jugs instead? If worrying about having an extra .5 quarts lying around is such an issue, why not go for the bulk sizes and save that much money all around and have the excess be justifiable (which btw, it is anyways as it's less to spend on the next batch), especially if .44 cents makes that much of a difference a couple times a year...

I'm all for early maintenance and quality oil but the larger filter discussion is ridiculous. Use what the engineers specify in this application. There truly is no good reason to swap filters sizes.

I can't imagine a scenario where I would have the capability to change my own oil but not have the place to store my own tools for the job or excess fluids for future jobs. But I'm sure someone will be happy to conjure one up now that I mention it.

Sorry you're having a tough time getting an actual answer, everybody must be in advice mode :ROFLMAO:

I think @paneubert is correct though I've heard it might contact a cooling hose idk. This is a recurring conversation, use the search function. Specifically search FL400S.

400 fits fine, plenty room to spare. The best part of the larger filter is it the way it chaps the "experts" ass.... :ROFLMAO:
