I think I'll risk it and cover that hitch now, lol.Someone saying, the possibility of the hitch rusting out, because you're using a hitch plug, is an attempt at fear-mongering, by somebody who opposes hitch covers. A feeble attempt at justifying their position. That's my opinion.
Here's the facts:
It's a square 6" tube that's open on both ends along with two holes on each side that even with a hitch plug in the holes and back are still completely open for airflow.
