Cars and trucks of all makes, models, and price ranges with "Push to Start" are being stolen in droves. Vehicles with physical keys to twist, not so much.

The wireless / keyless starting is easier to hack and does NO DAMAGE to the car making resale easy and more profitable than the vehicles with mechanical keys to start them.

Very content with my 2022 XLT with metal key to start it.
Thankfully a lot of people don't even know what a Maverick is lol

The articles I have seen appear written by quite poor writers. These authors write with the sole purpose of filling columns with words. Here's the tipoff: "STOLEN IN DROVES!!!!!!!!!" If you see a line like "stolen in droves" followed by the use of some unexplained criminal voodoo, it's a waste of words.

What vehicles are being stolen? We know about the Kias. That's been figured out. This implies "droves" of some other car. What car? What model? What FOB or key?

How? Puking "cloning FOBs" doesn't make it. Which FOB? How? An explanation that involves some criminal magic or voodoo is no explanation at all. Show me your video of how you cloned my Ford key, opened my door, and started my car. That would impress me. Now I can work on a solution.

Did I mention WE KNOW ABOUT KIAs?

That's not a solution because that's not the problem being discussed.

Now, thieves don't need your fob at all. They have "universal" devices. Like a master key it will open anything. And beyond that, it will START anything.

Basically, brute force. But digital force so there is no physical damage to the vehicle.

Hence some physical / mechanical security add on device is recommended.

For the non-brute force attack but still easier process to record fob signal - the faraday pouch your dad had that is being commented on.
Obviously his worked great - was in the truck and fob not seen.

Any way to find out what brand name it was?
Hopefully nice enough it's printed on outside.

All these comments of failed pouches show it's either not as easy as one might think to make it, or the cheapest Amazon version is not surprisingly poor quality.

I can see advantages to the Faraday cage. But also what about RFID credit cards, etc? Usually the distance has to be really close. And I do think the fobs "go to sleep". How else would a button sized cell battery in them last 4 or 5 years?

I do not know the brand my father had or I'd be happy to share.

At least the RFID CC's require outside power source thru the incoming signal, and on each use come up with a new code.
And really close as you said.

Fobs (at least keyless entry) do go to sleep with no movement - the question is where on person did they go while walking around - and is that seen as no movement?

For years people have complained about their step trackers when worn on wrist, would count very few steps when gripping a grocery cart. I've always wondered why that wouldn't be self-evident.
But solution to increase accuracy was to put device in pocked or hang from belt, and get more steps. (or put on ankle, to at least count 1 leg stepping!)

My fob is hanging inside pants pocket, with my real keys hanging outside. There's movement for sure. Enough for the fob I at least don't have - not sure.

Lariat or 25MY XLT/Lariat owner should walk up to their truck with fob in same location they just walked around store with - see if the handle sensors were woken up to let them in.
Betting yes since that is usually the desired effect.
Maybe send the kid out first to keep trying the door as the fob approaches, to see how far out it reaches.

Which means whole time walking around store, same signal blast range.

Local news here in midwest did report on local police announcement just like you had.
Now - could be the police all share potential problems coming their way - they didn't report any local stats on the issue. They also didn't give a solution, which is why the talk folks were discussing it.

The solution can be a hidden physical kill switch you use when parked, a physical club on the steering wheel, or a mechanical lock.

The guy with lock picking skills won't have a fancy computer jammer, and the guy with computer jammer won't have lock picking skills.

Probably.
Usually.

Wrong. Ok you can open the door with master key say. But the truck will not start. The dash warning will say, "Fob not present" I just tried it. I open the door with fob. Then I put the fob into the Faraday Box. It would not start and the dash said Fob Not Present. If you are worried about walking around in a store, then put your fob into a faraday pouch. My wife and I both have one for our fobs.

Not sure what I said was wrong.
Actually in many posts back I already commented on your discovery of the physical key and alarm system, several have reported on good boxes.

But, since many have reported pouches that didn't actually work correctly in blocking the signal - what have you found that actually does work, if there is a brand name on it?

That's why I was sharing the potential of the store, and why a good pouch is needed.
Pretty sure no one wants to carry around a box in a store.

I'm old school. I like to turn a key to start a vehicle. My only vehicles with push button starts were some of my race cars.

The club is only a solution for getting your steering wheel quickly cut to remove it. And why bother picking a lock when an air bag will pry the door open enough to unlock it with the classic coat hanger? The quote you should really be remembering is locks only keep out honest people. Otherwise they're just suggestions.

👎🏻

You have a poor outlook on life.
And I'm talking about the ignition.
Maybe go back and read all the posts you skipped over. If you care
