Why does "all electric" go away? Is it because it is no longer driving all electric?
If I am in the first bar above the green is the engine running?
When I break sometimes the needle goes below the green, does that mean it is no longer regenerative?
I would like to run electric as much as possible, but not sure when that is happening.

Not sure what trim level you have but Lariat is pretty different from XL/XLT in the gauges shown on the dash and on the Infotainment screen.

Regarding braking, if you stop too quickly and the needle drops below the green to the left of the dial, it just means that the battery cannot accept as much charge as is being generated. When you finish the stop, a message will show up showing how effective you were at braking. Stopping slowly and keeping the needle in the green will show 100%. If you drop below the green the result will be somewhat less than 100% so you want to keep the braking acting in the green area.

"All electric" means the vehicle is running on just the battery. My experience is that you get perhaps 10-15% of your total miles driven in that category. However, many times the battery and gas engine are both supplying energy to the drive wheels which is one of the reasons the hybrid gets so much better MPG than the EB.

One of the things I seem many people driving a hybrid for the first time is they are concerned about when the gas engine is running and when it is not. This is my second hybrid (my wife is on her third) and what I can tell you is don't worry about it. I also find that the more hills you drive on, the better that is for MPG. as the gas engine will stop when going downhill and the regenerative braking action is charging the battery.

When it gets colder the gas engine will run more often because of the heater setting. Believe that is also true when it gets really hot out and the AC is on almost all the time. Then you will see a drop in MPG. My summer is about 43-46 MPG and winter is 35-38 MPG. (Also, battery is not as efficient in cold temps).

Suggestions:
  • Start and stop slowly
  • Use ECO or Slippery mode for best MPG (and yes, you have to reset it every time you turn on the vehicle)
  • And if you want to get really crazy, you can carefully watch the monitor in the dash (I have a Lariat - not sure what this looks like in XL/XLT) and try to micro manage your driving to absolutely maximize your MPG.

I know there are other threads on TC about hybrid mileage and suggestions for getting the best from your Mav.

Hope this helps.

Driving all electric helps mpg during that time but when you use up the energy stored in battery and it gets to 30%, the ice comes on to replace the HVB soc to 40% resulting in you losing the into and out of battery conversion. Don't worry about staying in all electric just worry about using what recaptured energy that winds up in the battery. Worry about coasting more (use slippery) so you don't have to brake as much and suffer the conversion loss. In answer to "when needle goes below green" you are capturing all current which can be accepted by HVB and the extra will be hydraulic and/or engine braking. Engine braking is most noticable when HVB soc is above 70-72% which will usually be when you are in tow/haul or low or sport or going downhill in cruise and/,or other conditions.

Yes. Generally speaking, the truck will start in all electric for parking lots. This is normal - the gas engine is used for acceleration and highway driving.

If I am in the first bar above the green is the engine running?
This is a good general rule, but don't "accelerate slowly" and try to use electric power to get moving. This powertrain is meant to use the gas engine to accelerate, but is also using electric power to assist. It's more complicated than your question implies.

When I break sometimes the needle goes below the green, does that mean it is no longer regenerative?
Yes - this means that you are using the hydraulic brakes. For best efficiency it is best to keep it in the green zone when slowing down.

The EV Coach screen on the dash will help you with this.

Best wishes on your MPG journey....

This.
OP: Go into the settings via the steering wheel.
  • Turn on EV Coach.
  • Turn on Brake Coach.
The EV Coach screen will show you when you're using Electric (blue), using Hybrid (blue & white) and just the gasoline engine (white). The longer the blue box is on the EV Coach screen, the higher your battery is charged. When coasting or braking, one of the electric motors is charging the battery. This saves on brake pads - maybe 200k miles between brake jobs. It also captures energy that would otherwise be wasted as heat with the conventional brakes.

When you completely stop, the Brake Coach will pop up, showing how much of braking was done by recharging the battery. 100% means you wasted no power by using the friction brake pads.

There are lots of good videos on you tube. Just put Maverick High bred in the search bar. Good luck.

Live in ND. Have found mpg drops noticeably as temp drops below freezing and even more as it nears zero. Waiting to see how it does in warmer weather, but this has been a surprisingly warm one and the mpg swings have been impressive!

Just drive conservatively. Turn on the brake coach to train your feet properly. Adjust your speed so that you don't drive up to a stoplight and then hit the brakes, and instead slow down a bit and slide through on the green. Basic hi-miler tricks that every big truck driver also uses. You might like the one-pedal mode (hitting the L button on the shifter) to maximize your recharge around town, but be aware that just like on a manual transmission, your brake lights are not on while decelerating in this mode. The Mav is almost always electric-only while in a parking lot or driveway. Turn off the cabin heating, as that forces the gas engine on pretty quickly. Use the seat and steering wheel warmers instead. Turn off the automatic mirror heaters unless you're covered in ice or dew. Around town I get about 45% electric, while on the highway it runs the gas motor all the time. If I'm on country roads I get pretty much 45% electric as well. There is some hysteresis involved in keeping it in one mode or the other, and if it is on the engine you can normally kick it into electric by coasting for a second or more.

Mine used to show "100 percent regen capture", or something like that. It hasn't lately. Did I accidentally turn it off, or is there another reason?

Suggestions:
  • Start and stop slowly
  • Use ECO or Slippery mode for best MPG (and yes, you have to reset it every time you turn on the vehicle) there’s a device called MavMod on EBay that can set the drive mode from Normal to Eco (or any mode you prefer). Mine arrives this week and it installs easily. Search for MavMods on Ebay if you’re interested in changing the default drive mode.
  • And if you want to get really crazy, you can carefully watch the monitor in the dash (I have a Lariat - not sure what this looks like in XL/XLT) and try to micro manage your driving to absolutely maximize your MPG.

I amuse myself on my commutes by trying to keep ā€˜Steve Trucklet’ in battery mode as much as possible. Once I’ve accelerated to my target speed, I ease off the pedal and the ICE shuts down until the next time I need to accelerate again ( inclines, speed limit changes, traffic etc). My M-W-F work commute is 20 miles round trip and I try to travel at least 50% of it on battery. Frankly, the best part is sitting at a light next to the ICE vehicles around me, knowing that I’m using no gas as we wait for the green light!
