For no particular reason I crawled under my truck to see how it looks. I’m not a mechanic so perhaps the group knows what’s going on here. The rear passenger side, just under the tailgate has a plastic box not found on the right underside

Maybe, but I have a lariat with bed cubbies in both sides

This isn’t just the bottom of the compartment found inside the bed? Not all models have the access door but the storage areas still remains in all models.

My guess would be the extra shielding is to improve aerodynamics from the rear bumper catching air and creating drag.

Its just a undershield to help areodynamics and fuel economy. Nothing to do with storage.

My 2005 Subaru had a weird box too- I thought it was a weird place.

On the Subaru it's got charcoal in it, connected to fuel system to absorb extra gas after you turn off the car and the gas between fuel pump and injectors expands and needs somewhere to go.
