Hello. I just got back from a short trip and thought I'd share the experience with anyone who's interested in towing with their hybrid.

I am at a fairly low elevation in Las Vegas. App. 2000ft. We decided to spend the night at a nearby mountain range. At the final stop we were at 8700 ft.

The first thousand feet was a slow climb that was about 20 miles so it didnt take much effort and we could hardly feel the app. 2000 lb trailer.

The last stretch was very steep and went up about 5000ft in 40 miles.

I had it in tow mode and it was similar to sport mode in that it gave a good amount of power immediately and never went into electric mode while moving. Didnt notice any other characteristics from tow mode.

On the way there we were doing about 65 mph around a long bouncy curve and the trailer started swaying pretty bad, enough to where I had to counter steer a bit to keep the truck in the lane. At about 3 corrections in and no throttle or brake input a message came on the dash and said trailer sway detected and the truck applied the brakes and corrected the sway. I found that interesting.

The trip home was much easier and was 99ŮŞ downhill. I did notice one thing I was not a fan of. During the initial downgrade the truck was using the engine to help slow down when the brakes were applied. Normally I wouldnt mind but I didnt want it wound up like that for 40 miles. I switched between modes to try to correct it but all of them tried to assist. I'd rather replace brake pads and rotors over unnecessary engine wear.

Just as an fyi, high rpm from engine breaking is not the same as high rpm from accelleration As far as wear is concerned. Its designed this way for a reason. Sure youd rather replace your brakes. I’m certain you wouldn’t rather them overheat and fail though through your descent. Anyways, you got it done. Not here to rain on your parade. Just offering some perspective.

While I can't speak to the hybrid but I have the ecoboost FX4 AWD with 4k package and can say from personal experience that it tows more than 4k without a problem I wouldn't recommend you climb a 20% grade for miles on end while doing it but I didn't notice the truck having a problem when I towed almost 5k. Like I said I wasn't going up super steep grades with it either but normal driving going from point A to B In my experience it will do 5k pretty easily and imlive in Maine which isn't flat ground
They did some sustained max loads through the mountains on some reviews. Handled it fine. No harm in being safe though like yo said

Sway control uses the trucks rear brakes independently to control the sway. It does not use the trailer breaks because there is no way to apply the left or right trailer brake. They are both applied together. It works very similar to traction control and anti skid function.

As for the truck downshifting to help hold back the trailer, that is common on almost all newer vehicles that tow. It sounds like it is hurting the engine but it is a lot better than getting your breaks hot and them failing. Just ask any truck driver. It usually only works in tow or sport mode but may take a minute or 2 for the computer to switch modes modes.
Personally I noticed that if I have it in tow mode and let off the gas the RPMs will stay the same ish, but as soon as I tap the break it almost kind of kicks it into gear that it needs to drop a gear. That's at the break in the RPMs go right up slowing it down on its own. I thought it was pretty cool

Just got back from a similar trip. Different part of the mountain that's a little closer and 2k ft lower in elevation. Used the ac both ways and got similar mileage results.

Was that truck brakes or trailer brakes...I'm assuming truck since there's no tow package...
Must have been truck brakes, because I don't think that little trailer has brakes.

Were you able to monitor any temps and how did the truck do with the 2k trailer? Looking to get my order in next month got a boat that weighs roughly 2k maybe little more with gas and cooler. Hoping my wife would be able to pull it up to Lake Jocassee from Charleston once or twice a year. While i pull the camper with the F350. Other than that 95% of time wont have anything hooked to it. Hoping it could accomplish that task. It is about a 4hr drive with rolling 2-3% inclines.

The engine temp stayed in the normal range as without a trailer. It is very comfortable towing at its limit. I was doing some extreme grades at 45 without hesitation. Never went above 50% on the power meter.

I didnt factor people weight nor did I care to. I will never travel more than 50 miles towing and it 2 adults and 2 toddlers. The weight is their suggestion and you can safely tow in that area give or take 200 lbs
