Hello all,

I am wondering how long the truck will idle (Hybrid model) with the climate control on before the engine kick on? I've seen YouTube reviews where the engine defaults to 'off' when initially starting the truck...so I am wondering how long the system will run on the HV battery?

Mine is in transport from a dealer at the moment so I cannot test.

Thanks!

Mine kicks on within a minute or so in the morning. I haven’t needed AC at start up yet. That will be next week where I live!

depends on your hybrid battery level and draw.

Depends on many factors. Battery state of charge, exterior temperature, and what your climate control is set at.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I figured with a battery size ~1.1 kWh it would not take too long to kick on.

From a dead start? Pretty quick usually. If the truck's warmed up already though, it can go a while before turning back on, assuming you're not cranked to max (I keep it around 70-72 for this very reason).

This is a common usage mode. It's a great field office. Sitting in the shade, my Escape hybrid runs about 2 minutes every 20 minutes or so in hot weather with AC on.

Battery size is 1.1 kwh but ice will kick on at 30% soc and turn off at 70% so have max effective 0.44 kwh usable but about 0.33 kwh will be left open to receive Regen braking if needed. 😁 Also note that ice will not turn off if defrost on AC at max plus other reasons. See mannual.

Its very different than my Prius ( which kicks on 3x per hour like a clock )
Maverick in mild weather running A/C after initial ICE took over 40mins to restart ICE. In less mild weather the ICE turns on many 6-7 per hour. Almost non-stop under 35deg.

Check your decimal point there James!

😜 You meant to say 0.44 kWh usable. 40% of 1.1.

But that's ONLY IF you start at 70%.

If you "park in a park" with A/C on the truck is most likely to do:

30% - 40% - 30% - 40% - 30% - 40% all day long. That's enough power to run A/C on high for 5-6 minutes.

YMMV

Also point that the Maverick may run ICE more times per hour than my Prius it also runs less minutes each time. Maverick has Larger engine/generator and smaller capacity of faster charging battery makes sense.
Not really apples to oranges, but Maverick takes more gas for same results of internal comfort but not much more.

So if someone wanted to say... put a bed cap on the maverick, open the rear window and camp with auto on and off ac in their car for a night or two... is that possible?

You'd need a cap that seals to the cab. I thought most of them had their own window on the front. I would also be concerned about carbon monoxide given that the exhaust is right behind the bed.

I found out today while sitting with the A/C on that you can trigger the engine to start by pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor while in Park. It will shut off when the pedal is released.

After the engine started I was curious if I could rev the engine. The engine RPM will increase if you floor the pedal but it only revs to like 2000 RPM and stays there. It reminds me of increasing the RPMs while jump starting another vehicle.

Yep. Which is one reason "smog" emissions tests are no longer a tailpipe sniff test. They just connect computer cables and if the computer "says" it's ok, it's ok. They can't reliably "Rev" the engine to do a high speed sniff test.
