I tried to use the ignition switch/EPB switch/accelerator pedal method to put our 2023 XLT hybrid into brake service mode to no avail. So I downloaded Forscan and got the recommended USB OBD !! cable. I was able to get forscan to recognize our Maverick and checked for any faults, none were found. I clicked on the Forscan service function button and tried to put it in service brake mode, no joy. It started running and the progress bar got up to 9% and then a message read "brake service mode interrupted". I tired the other brake service functions such as applying the L and R EPB and releasing them and it worked fine. I also ran several other brake service functions such as calibration and they all worked perfectly. I'm stumped at this point. Any suggestions, has anyone else had this issue? I posted this problem to the Forscan forum but didn't get any replies.

I read on this forum about someone using a 9V battery/leads to activate the EPB motors after disconnecting the connectors to retract the motor mechanism that pushes on the caliper piston. Has anyone else tried this? It seems like this should work in conjunction with disconnecting the 12V battery so the EBB doesn't inadvertently activate.
Anyone who has done this please let me know how it worked for you.

I used a 12 volt lawn mower battery to do mine, I seen on YouTube where a guy used a 9-volt battery and it worked just fine

I did the procedure that's in the manual.

Activating Break Service Mode was easy....

Deactivating was not. It took me like 8 tries to deactivate it - but I eventually got it.

Some Mavericks will not go into brake maintenance mode with the procedure you listed

Well, as I mentioned in my original post, my 23 xlt won't go into brake service mode either using the method in the manual. I have discovered 2 other methods to do this so hopefully I'll get it done over the weekend one way or the other. Friday looks beautiful so we are going for a top down ride in our MX5.

The 9V battery method worked........almost. After the switch and pedal dance and Forscan failed to put my 23 xlt hybrid in brake service mode I used a 9V battery to retract the EPB motors. This has been covered elsewhere here and on youtube. I made a set of leads with the top of an old 9V battery and some small insulated alligator clips I had on hand thus making it easy to connect to the 9V battery.

I released the EPB and disconnected the 12V battery ground after jacking up the backend. After carefully cleaning around the EPB electrical connection I disconnected it, backed out the caliper slider pins and removed the caliper. I installed my brake caliper compression tool until it was just snug to the caliper piston and then connected the leads and battery to the plug. I couldn't hear the motor run so I reversed the leads and heard it running. After a few seconds I tried the piston compression tool and I pushed the piston in until I felt resistance. I connected the battery again until the motor stopped. I was then able to fully retract the piston.

The rotor was rusted to the hub and needed some 3 pound assistance and wd40 to get it loose. Cleaning things up I then put a coat of Neverseize on the hub and synthetic brake grease where needed before reassembling that side. I pumped the brake pedal and it felt solid after a pump or two. I checked and the rotor turned freely with just the normal bit of drag on the pads.

Onto the other side, I did the same thing but the piston didn't quite fully retract. I was using the only 9V battery I had on hand, a used one. I check it with my voltmeter and it was about 8V. So my options were to drive into town a 30+ minute round trip for a battery or try the EPB motor removal method, I chose the later. It was straight forward. As the piston compression tool was in place I could tell which direction to turn the splined shaft sticking out of the back of the caliper. I used a small pair of channel lock pliers and it turned freely until fully retracted. I reassembled it and the pumped the brakes with the same result as the other side, a firm pedal.

I reconnected the 12V battery and turned on the ignition and NO warning light! I pulled the EPB switch up and heard the motors run a few seconds. I checked and the rotors were locked and then they released properly, again no warning lights. A quick test drive later, thumbs up.

The dealer quoted $816, my cost: pads and rotors $67! delivered from Detroit Axle( I've bought brakes from them in the past and was happy with the quality) $20 for Forscan and $69 for the OBD 11 usb adapter Forscan recommended. Time to schedule the annual state inspection.

So I’m reading through this brake maintenance mode as I want to replace my rear brakes on my 22 hybrid. I was able to activate the brake maintenance mode, but can’t seem to deactivate that mode. Having the truck on, then pressing the gas pedal, pulling up on the EPB, pressing the brake pedal for over a few seconds and releasing, turning off the truck, then turning it back on in less than 5 seconds and releasing the EPB and pedal has not deactivated it. I have tried this several times. Any suggestions to deactivate it? I see where a dealer obviously can and maybe if you have Forscan with a 9v or 12v battery process. Has anyone been successful with the procedure on a 22 hybrid? Thanks

Just reading the 23 manual it appears to be what you are doing.

Deactivation- (of Brake Service Mode)

1. Set the ignition to ON.
2. Press and hold the accelerator pedal.
3. Place the EPB switch in the APPLY (upward) position. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.
4. Firmly press the brake pedal for at least 1 second. Release the brake pedal while continuing to hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.
5. Set the ignition to OFF then set the ignition to ON within 5 seconds, then release the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.

• NOTE: When Brake Maintenance Mode is deactivated, the Yellow Parking Brake and Red Brake Warning Indicators turn off and "Brake Maintenance Mode" no longer displays in the message center.

• NOTE: Once the ignition is set to ON, the EPB system will immediately apply and release the parking brake to guarantee sufficient air gap between the rear brake pads and brake
disc. If the EPB switch is not released prior to completion of this sequence, it will apply the EPB .
The EPB will have to released prior to moving the vehicle.

Thanks for the reply.

I saw a video where a guy tried the procedure but during the procedure he kept turning the key on and off and a screen came up to press the brake and pull up on the EPB. I ended up doing that randomly, I’m not sure I could repeat the exact same steps but I also got the message. That took it out of the brake maintenance mode. However, I was getting several warning lights and messages including hill assist not working, pre collision not working, and others. The truck was drivable but the brakes were difficult to use. Since I caused the warnings, I felt I just needed someone to put an ODB2 scanner on it to clear the codes. I have an ELM327 but never hooked it up. After several tries with two different phones and trying WiFi and Bluetooth, I gave up on it. I carefully drive to an auto parts store who read the codes and reset them. They were deleted and have not come back on. So, I’m still planning to do the brakes myself, but I’ll need to get a better scanner.

Having an OBDII adapter and an app is almost a must have.
Several on here use the vLinker FS along with forscan for laptop and also forscan lite for phone.
Forscan Lite gauges to display?
I got started with OBDLink MX+ on my last truck so still using it. It's about 2X the vLinker price.

Forscan shows a service procedure for EPB.
I'm not certain that is the same as brake maintenance mode.

Thanks. It looks like that is the direction to go. I have no clue how to use it but your pictures show me what I need to look for. One question, would something like the picture below also allow me to get into Forscan? Thanks again for the response. My XL doesn’t hand the cruise control and so I also may look into that here on the forum.

No that will not - it is complete simple scanner package, and won't have Ford specific procedures in it.

Go to forscan.org and get one of the compatible adapters shown.

Forscan is a program on a laptop, or an app on your phone/tablet - that uses that adapter.

Here's all the tests & services it can do - besides watching figures while running.
