I just installed an Orion Motor Tech (OMT) tailgate assist. The tailgate drops a fair amount before the assist catches. I would say it drops about 8". It seems like it should catch sooner. Is this normal?

I have never had this feature on a truck before so nothing to compare it to.

I got mine on Amazon. Not sure of a brand. As soon as I drop the tailgate it immediately engages. A slow drop the whole time. Sounds like to me yours is Defective.

The deezee brand on my maverick is great, slow drop. The off brand I got from Amazon on the old F150 doesn’t catch until about 1/2 way down

too much of a pain to take back off to return, and it’s a beater truck that’s 20+ years old.

Thanks. I got it on Amazon. The box was taped up when I got it so I think I got one that was returned.

I already took it of and repacked it, printed out the free return email. Just have to drop it off at Staples.

I bought the Deezee brand one, like Don806 and TheShark have, and am very happy with it. It begins working the second the tailgate begins dropping. (y)

I was looking at the Rough Country one but saw in their video that it dropped a good quarter of the way before it caught so ended up going with the DeeZee and its instantaneous.

I believe I have the DeeZee model as well. If I can guess it drops maybe 2” or so before it engages.

Which way did you install it? I think that does make a difference.

I have the rough country one and I did not install it as they show on their website because it behaved as you described, not catching or slowing down until 8-10 inches. Rough country tailgate assist

I have the Orion Motors (O/MT) that I got on Amazon for $22. It drops about 1/3 before catching. I thought that was normal until reading this post. The DeeZee is $37 and from what others are saying, catches immediately. Too late for me to return it, so I'll wait for when it needs replacing and get a DeeZee.
Must be their engineering and as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

I have the DeeZee also. It dampens the drop immediately. I got from RealTruck while I was ordering a bed cover. The provided a nice discount on both items.

Mine drops fast for about 1/4 of the way them it catches. I'm not too worried about that though. It would definitely drop fast ALL THE WAY without any tailgate assist anyway...😂
