So I have a civic that has its topcoat basically 50% peeled off at this point from sun damage. Its a 2008 with 180k miles on it. No rust damage on the body though. Local market value is $5-5.5k for same age/millage civics with the paint still decent shape. So the question is, how much do you think the peeled paint would affect my vehicle value?

This got me wondering about the Maverick I have being built. Seems like the Mavericks paint is not holding up great from what I am seeing on the forums. Would it be worth having a place like Macco spray a urethane clearcoat over the whole vehicle? I think it comes with a 5 year warranty. Would decent quality clear coat offer better protection than the ceramic coating? Seems like the cost for ceramic coat and the Macco clear is in the same ballpark.

I'm sure that there's an algorithm that accounts for all aspects of a car's condition when determining its value. But, in a nutshell, anything that detracts from the "new" look and feel of a car is going to diminish its resale value. Some buyers will care more than others, but a dealership will probably care the most. I'd recommend trying a private sale.

As for the durability of the Maverick's paint, I think that verdict is still out, even with the limited reports here. I am adding a hood protector just in case. I'll touch up dings and chips as necessary.

I think it depends on the vehicle. A two year old Lexus with 25,000 miles with bad paint (you fill in the reason) is going to get clobbered for the paint. A 10 year Chevrolet Malibu ( do they still make those) with 280,000 miles not so much. A 1964 Mustang convertible with 40,000 miles not so much.

anyone buying a car that old with that many miles just needs something that drives.

Normally i would have rock chips by the end of the first day but over 60 uber days and 5000 miles and not a single chip yet. we have gravel shoulders on the highways here. i would say my mavericks paint is excellent in terms of durability. Get a 3m clear bra if your really worried about it.

Paint condition on any 2008 with 180K miles is not enough to put any money into fixing it. Unless you can do it yourself.
As far as durability, OEM paint is now pretty darned good. Past the time when stuff was literally falling off the cars ( remember GM light blue and silver from the 80's). I would not touch a new Maverick paint. I don't subscribe to any coating actually adding much if any life to the paint.
On this Civic, we don't know if it even has oem paint. Could have been repaired at a body shop that didn't prep properly, spray enough film thickness, etc.

I don’t think I can think of a quicker way to completely ruin a new truck than to take it to Macco and have them respray the entire truck. LOL

I would buy the Mustang with NO paint on it.

I'd rather take my chances with an unprotected factory finish than to put a cheap clear coat on it. Down the road (literally) the factory finish will hold up better. IMO and experience.

Agreed. The cheapo paint jobs last about 3 to 4 years. I think prep is the big short cut.

Paint is all about presentation. The better is looks the Mo Money it will bring.

Given the cost of labor and materials for paintwork the value of many vehicles in no way justifies to cost paintwork to improve the appearance of the vehicle.
