Ordered some 3 mm black plastic sheets on Amazon and some 3m tape. A little measuring, a little heat from a hair dryer to mold the plastic a bit, and in no time I made my own covers for those unexplainable cavities that Ford left in the rear wheel wells (where dirt and water and debris can easily buildup).

I think they turned out pretty decent.

Will the mabbet ones allow you to delete that crappy short splash guard?

No, but it's not a splash guard. It's an aero deflector.
What I should have said is when you install these and if you remove the OEM splash guard do these cover the whole left behind by the splash guard I know they're not meant to be an actual splash guard I don't care for the OEM splash guards.

The Mabett overlaps the top edge of the factory piece.

So will they allow you to delete the OEM splash guard and cover that lower opening that the splash guard covers?

Good job! However, im curious if Ford has ever been consulted about these " spaces". Did they just cheapen out, or is it like that for a reason. I hope your solution doesn't accelerate rust. Time will tell. If it helps prevent rust, then shame on Ford for the design.

I put my hand inside the cavity. It is a plastic liner which I can only guess is used to strengthen the lower corner of the fender. Other vehicles will often have a rod going from the corner to a structural support, the Maverick doe not. There are drain holes in the bottom of it as I tested with a garden hose. The plastic insert also creates attachment points for the wheel well liner and aero flap. Based on the gravel and pine cones I pulled out before installing the Mabett covers I don't think blocking it off is worse than collecting mud and debris.
Good to know,ty for your response.

Yes, I would love to know why they left these open cavities in the rear wheel wells. Makes no sense.

That hole is where you flush out the rocker panel. With the snowy Atlantic winters you have, it's probably a good idea to cover it, but only during winter, IMO. Water sprayed in there flushes out the entire rocker. I don't think I would want that walled off, that ventilation is how the rock dries out. You might make the rust problem worse if you overdo it and keep them covered full time.
