I'm gonna write this to all instead of the specific person in this chain but here's my question..This is a forum to gain knowledge, support, vent, compliment, and generally chat and help...That being written why the fuke is it that certain responders wanna ruin that for all the rest of us by clapping back with smart ass remarks and try and make others feel inferior so the commenter can feel superior..Honestly, I'm getting so done with this forum just because of that bigdaddy67..Not all of us are math wizzes..I'm from the "Be kind, rewind" time ....Vent is complete

The Maverick bed is approximately 4.5'x4.5'x1.66' =33.6 cubic feet.
Add the tailgate down 6.16'x4.5'x1.66'=46 cubic ft, if you had the tailgate completely covered all the way to the top of the bed, which you only had about half of that. You did not have 60 cubic ft of mulch in 40 cubic ft of space. Your supposedly 3 cubic ft bags are actually 2 cubic ft.
Don't blame the OP, the bags in his pic are alearly labeled as 3 cubic feet.

Regardless of the actual size of the load, can we all just agree that the Maverick is quite the capable hauler for being a compact pickup?

That's why I said "supposedly 3 cubic ft bags". The "2 cubic ft" bags are probably actually 1.5 cubic ft too and the "1.5 cubic ft" bags are probably actually 1 cubic ft. I bought 20 of the "2 cubic ft" bags recently and it didn't go anywhere near as far as I expected. The op's bags do look bigger than the "2 cubic ft" bags I bought. I guess they just want to make them seem more price competitive to buying in bulk than they actually are so they just put a bigger number on the bag. It's not a knock on the op for believing what it says on the bags. The math just doesn't add up and people were right to express skepticism about it.

Just in case you don't think that this little truck does not haul much, here is a load of 60cu.ft. of mulch fitting below the bedrails. I'm pretty confident that I could easily put 100cu.ft. in the bed with a tarp, and another 20cu.ft in the rear seat area. Unlike a bigger truck, the suspension handles it really well, and it still pulls almost like it was empty.
I can put that much in my Prius.

32 bags. 64 cubic ft.

Perhaps to clarify whether the posted quantity is even possible. I clicked on this thread because I was wondering what 60cf of anything that was somehow squeezed in a 34cf bed looked like. Probably could've been communicated more eloquently, but it's the Internet. Like the CB radio of the modern era.

Maybe a better title would've been "Hauled 30 bags of mulch in the bed"?

Perhaps the same people that buy bagged potting soil instead of making their own, or that buy bottled Gatorade (or heck, even bottled water) instead of buying those bulk cans of Gatorade powder and/or having a water filtering system? Heck, a box of cold-brew black tea bags is $4 and is enough to brew 4 1/2 gallons of black tea, and yet bottled Lipton Pure Leaf flies off the shelves. AKA, it's not so much the product but the packaged convenience.

I paid 2.50 a bag for 2 cu/ft bags. 13.5( 1 cu/yd) x 2.50 =33.75. Since I had to buy 14 not 13.5 bags the cost was 35.00. Local seller of bulk mulch $44 per yard with a 2 yard minimum and here is the catcher, you must take it in 1 load. So $88 for what will fit in a Maverick. Plus I don;t need 2 yards. The other reason is bagged mulch is treated for termites, bulk mulch may be but doe not have to be. I bought bulk years ago and ended up with termites in it and so many weed seeds it increased the weeds in the landscaping.
It can be but gotta weigh the qulaity factors sometimes and such.. Our township has brush/tree collection they actually do their own mulching.. they will fill your truck bed for $10.. but while a LOT of people use it id like more to know whats actually IN it so generally I get bagged. now I only also need 7-10 bags tops

Yes, bulk is cheaper typically but quality can vary more than bag, where the size and color will be more consistent. Furthermore and more important to me, is its far easier to drag a bag of mulch to my desired location than to shovel from a pile into a wheelbarrow to tote to the same location.

Our county, and the small city I lived in before offers free mulch that they make from the yard waste we can take there free. Problem is I know the ivy and bamboo sprouts, from the stupid neighbor's yard, poison ivy, poison oak, and whatever others bring all gets ground up into the mulch. I can make that with my chipper which I spread in the woods along the trails but don;t want it around the roses. Also if I go to the county they use a large end loader and it is a scoop dropped into you truck even if it can't hold it. I saw a Frontier where the end loader operator mis-judged and buried the cab in mulch and he had the moon roof open and windows down.
yup same reason I dont use it..its the old Forrest Gump deal and the box of Chocolates... with Mulch like that.. You never know what you're gonna get..

Why does anyone buy mulch in bags? Because bulk mulch in the back of my Prius, at worse, could have permanently damaged the interior and at best, taken many hours of detailing to remove the filth. Bulk mulch is just for people with pickups or trailers.

The largest factor is moisture content. That is one of the reasons that mulch is used, to absorb water runoff and retain the moisture. Because mulch is wood chips, it has lots of sharp edges that make small perforations in the plastic bags. It is not a sealed storage system. These bags are usually stored outdoors because it makes storage prices cheaper, thus absorbing rain water. So a bag of mulch will weight 2x as much in the winter as it does in late summer.

You can't have tried moving it after you get to your destination. Bags are very easy to move, while shovelling it out and then cleaning the stains out of your liner is a much bigger problem. Then there is the problem of questionable-at-best bulk mulch quality. I'm still digging up lots and lots of deep onion bulbs 5 years after using bad mulch. Bags are better.
