Years ago I made a U Channel device out of 3/4" pine board and lined it with some scrap carpet to slide over the tailgate when hauling 10 foot conduit or PVC pipe. After a while it still marred up the clear coat a bit but a quick buffing with a D/A brings it right back. Food for thought.
