On the Ford app under maintenance, it says to lubricate U joints “if there are grease fittings.” Does the Maverick have grease fittings? If so, how many?

Don't think you'll find any grease fittings on the maverick nor any other brand/model unless you go waaaay back. The sealed never needs grease concept has taken over for the most part nowdays, maybe thats good, maybe thats bad?

Thanks. I was surprised that was in the manual. My 2019 tacoma still had zerks so I wasn’t sure if they were making a comeback.

Well old dogs can learn new things............ I always thought it was "grease zerts" so I looked it up. Zerk is correct; named after its inventor Oscar Zerkowitz, an Austrian who changed his name to Zerk when he moved to America.

Just wanted to share this important info. This is the kind of stuff that makes my worry my brain might get full............:unsure::sneaky:

Back when I was a mechanic and cars had grease fittings, the sealed joints had a plug that could be removed and a Zerk installed. These were ultimately eliminated as power grease guns would blow the boots apart and water and dirt got in and the joint life was reduced rather than improved with greasing. Joints are better than in my day as they last much longer than the older grease style joints.

I changed the oil in my '05 SSR, took my grease gun with me to do a proper service and was going to pull the wheels to regrease the bearings and check the spindles for wear. No zerks and sealed bearings. My brake pads are good for any hairpin turn I might come across (at the posted speed limit, of course 🤫).

Exactly! People complain about modern vehicles not being as good as they used to be. But I don't know of any of the old vehicles that would sometimes go over 100 000 miles on the original steering and suspension parts. Today it's fairly common

I have been known to grease things with a sawn off turkey baster... things that theoretically can't be greased.

You need the large syringe type, with a decent plunger seal, there's some cheapies that are useless, and due to the fact the needle probably has a side hole in it, cut the needle off above that and smooth it out. Now I stick moly extreme pressure grease in it, and shoot it in the boots by forcing it under one end or other, if it hasn't got enough stretch it's probably due for replacement. Then also you can attack sealed bearings by shooting the gap, or prodding a hole in the shield and putting a glob of rtv or whatever is to hand over it after. Not servicable my ass.. Though this is usually done when things are good few years old to keep them hanging on rather than a regular service.
