Read my post #41 that's exactly the one that I bought my niece's boyfriend after his ordeal following Google Maps for a shorter route. Turned out the road turned to gravel halfway through. Google Maps doesn't tell you that.
Everyone should have a Rand McNally somewhere in their vehicle - if you lose connectivity, your phone doesn’t work you’re screwed even the Ford App or Connectivity Services can’t help you maybe installing a “StarLink” antenna on the roof may not be so crazy in the future…

I like the voice option on the steering wheel I press it and simply say “drive me to”
and if you hold the button longer you can ask Siri to do that via Apple Maps or Waze.....

If this is the Garmin Montana you had. As a handheld. I can certainly understand why, you want the bigger screen display of the Maverick. Especially when driving.

Plenty big for motorcycle handle bar and Montana is mostly for off-road Trails that GoogleMap doesn't do. Garmin Montana GPS files can easily be move to CarPlay. For streets GoogleMaps is my choice.

Will Waze work without cable?
If you have wireless CarPlay, yes. Our 24 ioniq 6 has wireless charging but not wireless CarPlay. USB only, but a $30 usb wireless CarPlay dongle from Amazon fixed that. Waze Works even with phone in my pocket.

With GoogleMaps attached to CarPlay I use this all the time. Find "Home Depot"...and it will display the nearest Home Depot and map to get there. "Motel", displays all motels in the area, their location, price, phone number and directions.

only problem is Garmin is very old technology and is likely to disappear before long ( like full size digital cameras).
Doubt it.
And then add all the Chinese manufacturers of automobile and truck GPS units.

Garmin is still strong financially, and profitable mostly due to their aviation, ship GPS units but are losing in the personal GPS device market, mainly due to cell tower coverage. Garmin's push now is into personal wear items like watches and tracking devices for joggers. With cell tower access on cell phones it is harder for Garmin to reach satellite signals directly. Cell phones take so much less battery life compared to a standalone GPS. All my Garmin's have to be plugged in all the time. Cell phone as GPS I use can run for a day or two between charges. The negative on smart phones is sometimes you can not reach a cell tower in remote places, but that is rare (as long as you don't us AT&T)...but you can set up a smart phone to follow tracks without a cell tower.

I'm very involved in motorcycle trips and motorcycle people are leaving Garmin in droves to convert to smart phones, mostly due to bigger screens and GPS costs. Many are installing CarPlay on their motorcycles.

Stop making crap up…… LOL

Garmin is an $8B a year company.

Do you have any idea how prevalent Garmin is within the Avionics and Marine segment (Let alone auto and personal space)?
Yep, I got a Garmin handheld GPS for hiking.

Good luck being in some of the places with no cell signal....
