I've seen all sorts of different products and had wheel chains when in Europe (req'd by law to be carried in mountainous areas in most countries there.).

Tire Socks type, traction boards are definitely a good option, though they can be bulky to haul around everywhere.

Had a friend use his car mats in a drift when at a bit of a nose up angle hill..it worked as he wasn't in too terribly far.

Yes. I agree. Traction boards are big and expensive and go against my "everything must fit under the tonneau cover" method of off-roading and camping :) I don't find myself in this situation enough to warrant the expense. I think I'm just going to cut up two or three two by sixes and throw them on one of my totes for if and when this happens again :)

they have some at harbor freight and I saw the C&D article I linked had a set for $100.

but yes, you can spent a sh!tload on certain traction boards, rotopax fuel cans, etc. the offroad scene gets bougie and expensive LOL

Something else that I think that I learned from this whole situation is that the rear axles seem to be a better option for this kind of stuff. Because of the way the front axle works with an open diff and reactionary break applications, the rear axle seem to be more slow and steady. But this is just from one time self-recovering. It might have been just luck.

you're not wrong at all; the tremor and lobo rear axle have a rear differential lock button. the RDU is actually locked by default and uses clutches for slippage, the opposite of how an old school 'limited slip' differential works.

you can experiment with it next trip, but I would probably not use it, as the truck will turn a lot better with it unlocked. locked is for rock crawling and when you're already stuck or highly likely to get stuck.

Are those Good Years the OEM tire now for the Tremor? They look more aggressive than the previous Falkens. What is the tire model name & size?

I assume you're joking, that's why I laughed at your post.

Traction boards do what he's done on the front.

Nope not joking, I'm aware of traction boards. I see this as a different solution that could dig its way up out of a hole.
I could be wrong and probably won't find out, I'm scared to take my Mav to the local off-road park, but only because there are narrow areas where bushes are gonna scratch my nice paint

you would not want to have something big rotate in case it hit the fender liner, suspension, etc.

traction boards work and they're easy in sand. they're not nearly as much fun in the mud lol

A Tip for using traction boards:
If you tie a long piece of 550 cord to each board and loop the center over your hitch ball you will drag them along with you after you are unstuck, until you get to a dry/firm spot. No need to walk back into the slop to dig your boards out.

A pair of boards is enough. If you think you need 4 then you really need to consider a Hummer H3 and a winch instead. (you don’t need 4).

OP,
Great job in figuring things out when you were in a bind.

I have a pair of short traction board that work great in sand at the beach.
$39 for the pair from Amazon. Came with a storage bag. Not bulky or heavy.
I keep them under the bed cover, in case I need to pull a Toyota or Chevy out.

I have a set of roll-up Traction Strips that work great for sand. They come in a smallish case and have been super useful here in Baja. Fun video thx!

OP- great post and video, thanks! I have a small set of roll up traction boards that work really well in the sand here in Baja. Very portable and easy to carry. See them here on Amazon as well as other brands.

I was debating to myself on if I should post this here. Some of you are going to be glad I'm having fun actually off roading my Tremor. Some others will scold me for taking chances on tearing it up. Guess what? I had fun and I didn't tear anything up ... luckily hehe

The only other time I got stuck was in some snow, off roading with some buddies in the Sierras. They just hooked up a rope and pulled me out. Easy peasy :) This is the second time I got stuck. We were on our own and had to figure it out ourselves. I got it stuck pretty bad climbing a sand hill near my house. We tried a log and cement block under the tires and did some digging but we were sure is was on the belly pretty much the full length of the truck. He wanted to try the old strap-a-log-to-the-rim trick but since all the tires and suspension is still stock, we were sure a log would catch a quarter panel this way. So, he tried strapping a smaller log to the underside of the tire, instead of the outside of the wheel, kind of like a tire boot. It climbed right out after we did that. It was amazing. My brother decided to record a quick little video right after we got out of the holes we dug, as he guided me to ease back slowly just enough to untie the little log :)

That's a good post. We were thinking what we could do to help when driver encountered a situation like this.
