Fuel line leak

Okay so I went to go run some errands in my Maverick just now and smelled gasoline. I popped the hood and discovered a fuel line on top of the engine was spraying gasoline all over the engine compartment. I haven't driven it in about 6 weeks and have no idea what could have damaged that fuel line. I initially thought maybe it was a critter but it's a metal line so that doesn't seem like a viable suspect. I did have the oil changed shortly before the last time I drove it but I can't see how they could have damaged the fuel line and/or how I wouldn't have noticed it until now. Waiting now for the tow truck to take it to the dealer. Attached shows the line in question (I wrapped it in aluminum foil to prevent fuel spraying everywhere).

Any idea what could have caused this?

Was the black ribbed protective cover pulled away (like in the photo)? Was the black ribbed protective cover damaged at all?

The plastic black ribbed cover was torn at the location of the hole in the fuel line.

If it wasn't rubbing on something, then that seems very suspicious for both the ribbed cover and the actual line to be punctured. Either a critter gnawed on it....or......I don't have another alternative.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, when blowing up the picture it almost looks like something was gnawing on the ribbed cover. Either that or a friction rub?

There's nothing to cause a friction rub. I thought the fuel lines were steel but thinking back, the fitting was metal but the line was black so its plastic? If so, it's definitely possible a critter bit through it.

Dealership just called and confirmed the plastic high-pressure fuel line had been chewed through by a critter. Argh!

When a rat chewed through a hose in my wife's SUV, I was told to wrap Bounce dryer sheets in several locations away from moving parts in the engine compartment. I stapled the ends to keep them in place. The odor confuses the critters and they leave. Change them every month as they loose their "bounce".

I place a small sponge with some peppermint extract on it inside a plastic zip lock sandwich bag, cut a few small slits in the bag to release the scent, then zip tie it under the hood on ALL our vehicles. Even the ones parked inside. In my experience it's been the only thing to deter rodents. I just apply a half dozen or so drops of the extract every 4 months or so.

I've been doing this for years, ever since spending several days to find the wires the rascals chewed through on my F150 causing a no start condition on it. That was not a good time

FWIW they seem to like dryer sheets.... they make great nesting materials.

Peppermint oil also in engine compartment soaked in cotton balls in gum container left & right sides..
Roof rats are an ongoing chore. Years ago in the attic chewed thru network cables.

when they loose their bounce spray them with Peppermint oil, works with a lot of insects too. takes 2 seconds.
used to have a few outside cats around but the coyotes pretty much ended that.
