Yes, a cellular network.

There isn't anything that technically would prevent them from updating over cellular. Requiring a WiFi connection to update is a design decision made by them for reasons only they know. Performance of a traditional internet connection over that of a cellular connection is likely part of it.

That is because the truck knows someone is sitting in the seat.

Our cars coming to get us in a parking lot will happen when we hit L3 of autonomy. Coming to get us anywhere is an L4 thing. We are decades out.
When did they take the location out? Have not used mine since I got new phone.

I'm convinced telematics and fordpass is likely cause of battery drain issues.

Deleted app, removed fuse few days ago, so far so good. Disabling connectivity through the truck is a soft off. Regardless if you have the app / disabled connectivity, it still sends data to Ford.

No app, no fuse, no communication back to Ford.

Mine shows the odometer reading if I select the "Service" tab. The reading is in the upper left corner.
Oh. Oops. I didn't realize. I just checked my app now and went to the service tab and found it. Thank you for letting me know. So, they just relocated it then.

Autoline After Hours did a show some time back on how data is collected and used in autos. There are companies out there that maintain a simulacrum of your car from collected data (not all of which comes from the car itself). Other companies buy this data, including insurance companies to set individual rates. Others to pitch warranties. Also companies buy data to better market to you. Data about you and your comes from your car, service centers, state government, etc.

It's not 100% fleet coverage yet. I seem to remember it was 20 to 30 percent. The show wasn't "vast conspiracy" kind of stuff. They literally had the CEO of the collecting company on the show. It's not like anyone was trying to be evil or anything. They're just collecting and monetizing information. You put that Visa in the gas pump, that data is sold. You register your car, that data is sold. Endlessly.

Your car and how you use it can literally be modelled in real time. Most people have no clue. I used to work with big data back when I had a functioning brain (long gone now), and it's amazing how completely you can analyze a human being from a million tiny factoids. Same for a car or truck.

Your pic shows a hot pepper red Maverick with a black kit, I love that, had to settle for a terrain since Lariats are hard to find anyway.
Thank you. I special ordered it which is the only way to get one that you really want. Most Mavericks are the XL and XLTs with Lariats being a little harder to find like you said. The black kit is the FX4 package which gives you the black 17" wheels standard. The black on red (more orange red) is a great combo. But, the Terrain on black is nice as well. I've seen those before and they're very sharp.

If it can connect to the internet, how come it can't do updates? I have to connect to my own network to do that.
Getting the tiny amounts of data needed to get the status of the truck or pass on a command to start it is something you can do like a text message over the cell network. It'll wager it's much cheaper for Ford to have that very limited cell service that is never going to move any real data around.

And there's really not much benefit to having that capability. You don't want to be updating any software in the truck while it's driving around. If you have to be parked to install the update you might as well be parked at home on your own network.

I'm sure it gives them lots of information about you and your driving habits.
It's not so much that, but them turning around and selling it . . lie in the current litigation against Cadillac/GM.

For some reason, folks took offense to their insurance rates going up after Cadillac sold data!

It was a feature for version 4.x and it was dropped when they pushed out 5.0.
Not sure what you guys are talking about as far as the location. My 24 Mav shows real time location as does my 22 250. That's how I saw where the the truck was moving when they stole it. I watched the truck moving on the app. I'm currently on 5.4.0

Seems like a great idea, a modem built into the truck that you can connect to all the time. But I don't get it.

What you get with Ford Pass.

Location.
Fuel milage.
Tire Pressure.
Auto Start and Lock.

Here are some things I don't understand.

What is it connecting to? I assume a cell tower.

If it can connect to the internet, how come it can't do updates? I have to connect to my own network to do that.

You can auto start the truck from the app, yet if you're sitting in the truck, you have to press down on the brake to start.

While there are some really cool features in the app, seems like it should do more. Like have the truck come get me or something.
If you remember when the maverick first came out it came with free internet modem.this was canceled after the first year.

My ford pass shows where my truck is and I just did an update a couple weeks ago

It no longer tracks in real-time and displays that on a map. It will show you where it was last started/shut-off, but it does not update while the vehicle is in motion. That was stripped in 5.0 with Ford stating it was because they no longer have the ability to provide it.

Correct.... I wish they would add it back
