I have had my Maverick for a year now (11,500 miles). Overall I love it. No regrets. I only have one complaint, when I drive around town at around 40-45 MPH in normal driving mode, the tach sits around 1500 RPMs. And slugs in between gears. I have to step on the accelerator to get the RPMs up to shift to the next gear. In sports mode, I don’t have that issue because the computer is programmed at a higher RPM. Reminds me of the days shifting a standard from second to fourth. Just seems odd for a vehicle that targeted city commuting. Anyone have a similar experience?

Try tow & haul mode, that should put you in the middle of those 2 modes, at least mine does.

Mine doesn’t have a tach. Does anyone know anything about high an rpm the truck should idle? The engine kicks on sometimes and it sounds like the engine is idling higher than it should be

That seemed to work pretty good. It did feel like it tightened up the steering and the breaking seemed to change as well. Not sure if it was in my head or not. I do think each mode does adjust steering and breaking. Maybe a tech guy can chime in on this.

Well, the Hybrid doesn't just "idle" the engine - ever. If the ICE is on, it's either providing traction drive, or (most likely what you're experiencing) it's running to recharge the HVB. It takes a bit more than "idle" RPM to turn what is effectively a fairly powerful generator.

Or running to generate heat or finish up heating the catalytic converters if it's the first time it's started in a drive cycle.

The 'sweet spot' in thermal efficiency for the hybrid engine is something like 1600-2200 RPM so it's usually going to run at that speed for as short as it needs to and understandably sound fast compared to a regular vehicle that'd idle at 800 RPM.

I have the 2.0 gas engine. Sorry for the confusion on the Hybrid reply.

Hybrid Idles at 1250.
(but tries to the least possible)

I lived in both Colorado and Minnesota with my 2005 Hybrid Escape. It was programmed to idle at something like 1600 in sub-zero °F (-18°C).

Now in California I'll probably never be cold enough to test the Mav but there's a good chance it is the same.

Governed to 5600.
