This is what I also believe. I've experimented with using L and it really does not make sense.If you look at the power needle everyone has, the brake and "L" regen the exact same wattage into the battery.
The brake pedal is NOT using friction pads so long as the needle does not hit 100%. (So use your foot but keep the needle a little above horizontal.)
Brake pedal will activate your brake lamps.
L will NOT activate your brake lamps.
"L" stands for lazy.
Beware, if you use L continuously it WILL heat up your battery, possibly putting more thermal stress on the battery than using more gentle braking.
I'm selecting eco mode which tricks you into driving very conservative.
Then coast as much as possible to stops without being a pain to other drivers.
When using the brake peddle go light and long to get the most juice out of regen.
It's been working for me.
