Just curious. My brother's XLT just got build and he lives in San Diego and needs it ASAP. Wondering if it would come quicker since built in Mexico.

Theoretically, yes. But my Maverick spent more time sitting in the Portland railyard waiting for a truck up to my dealer than on a train.

I have gone through this process three times since 2022. The first was a 2022 Escape that came from the Midwest. The second and third were both Mavericks coming from Mexico.

Mavericks come into the US at the same point in Arizona. Then, they get rerouted to a rail yard, where it is transferred to a transport truck. The service location for southern California is near Ontario, California.

The time it takes from build completion to delivery at the dealer depends upon
  • The ability to get the truck loaded on a rail car heading in the right direction. In theory, there are a lot of Mavericks heading to southern California. Thus, it might get loaded relatively quickly. It might not sit too long in Mexico waiting for a rail car.
  • The time it takes to land in Ontario is not very long. In both cases, the Mavericks arrived and were unloaded at the rail yard about five days after being loaded on the rail car.
  • The problem is getting a transport truck loaded for the dealership. In my case, the dealership does enough volume to fill an entire transport truck with vehicles going to one location. Here is how much it varied in our case: We waited four weeks for the Escape to be delivered; We waited two weeks for the 2022 XL Maverick to be delivered; And the 2023 XLT Maverick delivered in January took three days to go from rail yard to dealership.
To be safe, I would estimate three to four weeks from being loaded on a rail car to delivery at the dealership. The 2023 XLT delivered in January was the best-case scenario. It was delivered within ten days from the date it was loaded on the rail car.

Yep, and the opposite can happen as well. Mine took an average amount of time for the train portion, but then only sat in the final rail yard waiting to be delivered to the dealer for a couple days max. The specifics are hazy at this time, but I know it even spanned the Thanksgiving holiday and still managed to get delivered pretty quick.

Edit: Looks like my 22 was loaded in Mexico on 11/20 and I picked it up on 12/8.

No. Statistics may prove me wrong, but it wouldn't be something you could bank on. There is a reasonably consistent time line story about VIN's and build dates, but everything gets crazy when the truck gets shipped. Logic goes out the window.

Yes, but they don't get sunlight until after the rest of the country, so when you take that into consideration, we can call it even.....
