I know for sure this is not normal. This is my third Maverick and they all worked the same. This one worked correctly for three weeks and then suddenly changed. I agree with wblake68, either the wire has been disconnected from the sensor or there is a possible problem in the sync system which is less likely. But, my screens are so dim that I can't see anything on them unless I turn the headlights off. It is also normal for night driving.

It does look like checking the sensor connection itself should be easy (pic in other thread) if you have some plastic pry tools (like these).

I'm going to try lifting the sensor out of the dash to check it. I am also looking for a wiring diagram to see where that wire connects to. So I can check that end of the wire as well.

Another thing to check which will tell you more about what is happening...When you first start up and the dash is bright, is the green headlight indicator in the lower left of the panel illuminated? Then, when the dash goes dark is it illuminated? If the dash gets dark and the green headlight indicator is illuminated then the computer sensed dark, turned on the lights and dimmed the dash. If the dash dims and the headlights do not turn on then it's not the sensor.

I would also question if the service department 'tested' in the garage where the auto lights will almost always turn on. Also, they don't test drive often in my experience.

In the case of our Flex it took a bump or two to trigger the sensor (shake the cable loose).

Do be careful, the plastics in these vehicles is easy to scratch/dent!

That is not a reasonable solution when there isn't another Ford dealer around for many many miles.
I know from experience almost 40 years working for a dealer if you didn't buy your car their and bring in a vehicle with 500 miles on it with this kind of problem their not going to be in a big hurry to look at it, they also have access to the service files on the vehicle.
My dealer that said the dark screen was normal am sure they called the tech hotline were told what to say.
They don't have a fix for this and won't admit it. Ford has so many issues now, every day another recall comes out 2 this week, their engineers are working overtime trying to find solutions for them this is not on top of the list.
