The pictured piece came with my tailgate assist but is not mentioned in the instructions. Can anyone shed some light on it.

That's truth. Also true, you'll find them just as soon as you install the replacement clips you bought.

Definitely spring clips for the ends of the small strut. I've had to remove the strut on mine a couple of times to get to the lower taillamp bolt, which is blocked with it in place. When removing, that little clip can fly off, leaving you checking the ground around the truck for where it landed. - My suggestion, keep the spare either in the glovebox or in the storage cubby under the armrest, you'll eventually need them.
