My dealer told me I could come in and get on their preorder list with a refundable $500 deposit which would put me in front of any orders they receive when the window opens on Aug.15!

I am in the Buffalo NY area. (Western NY) Basil Ford in Cheektowaga texted me today.

Quote. I would be happy to address your concern. This is pre-registering for when the order banks reopen. We are asking for a $500 deposit, that can either be put towards your vehicle or refunded to you at the time of delivery. If you'd like, I can get you in touch with one of my product specialist for them to go over specifics such as price agreements and the like. Is that something I could do for you? End quote.

So they want a deposit on a pre-order. I am fine with a deposit on an actual order BUT a pre-order not so much. Plus with no actual order there is nothing to sign showing the price as they don't even know what the prices will be for the 2023 models.

I sure don't want to wait till August 15th then try and place order and get told there are 50 people ahead of me. I would THINK that if I place order on Fords website on the 15th and pick dealer then that dealer would follow the order in which they receive the online orders not some pre-order arrangement. Or will dealers just ignore the online orders they receive and use there pre-order list even though those people never even did the online order thing? Yes I understand its NOT really an order after I do the start of ordering on fords website. The dealer actually places the order. BUT still would think they would follow the order they receive the online "order" not sure what you would call the part the purchaser (me) goes online and starts process.
I haven't seen anything about Reservations for MY2023, but for MY2022 they did reservations 1st on-line. When I did my reservation on line, they did not let me pick a dealer- it was based on my ZIP code and sent automatically to that dealer and they emailed me almost immediately to confirm my reservation. I would not be surprised if the same thing happens when you order on-line too. This was my local dealer I purchased from previously, so I dropped in to confirm they had my correct info, and when it came time for me to order, I used on-line build & price tool and took my print out to this local dealer and placed my order off my build sheet. YMMV

Dealer texted me they had a XL AWD available for 7500 over MSRP. I said no Looking for hybrid xlt. They then said if I want to pay only MSRP I need to order one and I should come in NOW to preorder the hybrid version. I said no orders till August 16th . They said come in now to get on a list.

So if I do that I wont get any kind of order sheet with price . Would you do this and if so what should I get in writing if anything?
What is the harm in getting on the list? That is, if you are referencing a the list JUST TO be called when it opens up.....not a actual order yet. Looks like the dealer is smart to start building a book for when the orders actually do open up. Just don't give them any money just to be on a call list. You can negotiate price later or if you don't like the price tell them to go pound a tail pipe.

I will see if they let me get on list WITH OUT a deposit . I have no problem with a deposit when an ACTUAL order is placed. WHY is when its time to place actual order I want to get that order with price agreement signed with deposit. Other wise they will pull out this no price deposit with what ever they right up on paper showing deposit with no prices!! Then when Mav comes in they will pull that out say see here is your deposit we didn't guarantee we wouldn't raise the price 10K over MSRP. TRYING my best to have some price protection if dealer decides to screw me over.

Okay I will bite.

Say you go to this (or another dealer) who says you can place your order now for MY23.

#1 Are you given a number will show you where you are in line at the dealer compared to others who do the same thing.

#2 On the day the order banks open if someone goes to the dealer who didn't pre-order will the dealership tell them that no they won't take their order because all the pre-orders haven't come in to finalize there order. I don't see the dealer turning that buyer away.

#3 On the order bank open day will it be first come first served as to who pre-ordered gets their order in.

#4 All orders on the first day either pre-ordered or walk-ins will get the same priority code so not one of these orderers pre or post have any jump on anyone else who ordered.

#5 You can't guarantee that the dealer won't do an ADM or add-ons markup since you can't do a "Buyer's Order" until the order banks open.
