am I correct saying the purpose of the turbo is to compress air/raise pressure to the intake and the air is run through the intercooler which cools the air. Cooler air condenses and thus the pressure goes down. Can you compensate for the drop in pressure by making the air channel from the turbo to the intake smaller?

Any testing done to demonstrate any significant engine performance over stock?

By cooling the intake air temperature down you create a dense oxygen friendly mixture allowing a richer mixture of fuel and that creates more power. And naturally oxygen supports combustion.

Know what it is, what it does. Query of its performance merits.

I guess when the Panda Motor works reply's to you they will give you estimated horsepower gain. On my Buick Grand National I had a gain of around 19 HP with out any injector changes or exhaust mods. However with the cooler air charge I was able to raise the boost pressure and there's your power.

It would be easier to turn up the initial pressure expecting it to drop to where you want it instead. The more air you can move through without it building pressure the better you are off for making power.

Well technically you will gain zero hp. Your grand national was a flawed test. When they tested some other parameter was changed or that was gains on a hot run not cold.

Intercoolers will not add power on an ecoboost. They will simply prolong the power you have. As you drive with any significant boost your stock cooler starts to hold heat. As heat rises like hauling or driving hard the intercooler starts to raise temp not allowing it to exchange heat as well. As that heat starts to raise AIT’s timing and boost are pulled. This new cooler will take much longer for heat soak to accumulate thus giving you maximum power for the longest time.

It's a complicated subject there are very many variables that come into play why intercoolers aftermarket or stock plays a part in helping make horsepower. This is why manufacturers use it in the first place it's an integral part of making more horsepower by reducing cylinder temperatures and allowing increased ignition timing without detonation. As you say depending on conditions heat or otherwise an engine will lose horsepower regardless of intercooler or any other modification but there still is a horsepower increase compared to an engine without the cooler. Power is usually lost due to computer controls that control spark timing through the use of knock sensors and other controls. And of course climate conditions are a factor when a test is being used on a Dyno. Here's an older photo of my National with a stock cooler. after a intercooler change with no other mods the engine produced around 19-23 HP on a Dyno test on a 68 degree day.

This is all the information we have available currently. We will have a unit in for testing and tuning with results sometime soon.

Not necessarily. EcoBoost's benefit GREATLY from upgraded intercoolers. You aren't going to notice any performance gains by just slapping one on. However, when you get into tuning, an upgraded intercooler is one of the best mods you can have. They allow for richer fuel mixtures and more efficient combustion, ultimately leading to a boost in HP and Tq.

But yes, negating heat soak is the #1 reason the average person should be attracted to an upgraded intercooler. But if you are looking for more power, that option is now there.

Agreed, coming from other ecoboost platform and be well versed in builds I was more or less keeping it simple.
On this platform similar to my other trucks I believe the benefits would be greatest if towing even in stock form.
But agree they do very little unless using tuning to support it.
