My '22 Hybrid has thrown code p0402 intermittnetly over the last year or so. My warranty just expired a few weeks ago so of course it came on again. I got the letter for the 24n04 customer satisfaction program and wanted to see if the dealer would fix it for free.

I was at the deadlership for another recall and wanted them to look into it, but they said they would only do so if I paid them a $200 "scan fee," which is basically a huge gamble--if I pay $200 and it's not covered by the program, I'm basically out $200 since I'm not going to pay them to fix it anyway. Seems like a huge scam. I called the service department to try and talk to the manager, but the associate helping me out just got pissy and said they wouldn't wave the fee, and if I went to "any shop in the area" they'd charge me the same thing. Total B.S.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone knows what parts are affected by the program and if the p0402 code is related to it. I'm perfectly comfortable fixing this myself, but if it's gonna take more than $200 in parts then it'll still be worth it to have the dealership do it.

P0402 code means that the EGR valve is not closing fully. That will probably affect your idle fuel mixture a lot. Are you under the 5/50 drivetrain warranty limits?

Should be...I've only got 23k miles and I bought the vehicle in April 2022. Ford says I'm still covered but I think they're gonna charge me that $200 scan fee no matter what. If there's no way around it then I'll just bite the bullet, unless anyone knows a Ford dealer in Norther Virginia that will work with me.

Spend a little time on the phone, there must be several or a dozen dealers near you!

Doing some more research...wondering if anyone has seen this before: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10232494-0001.pdf

This is pretty much what I'm dealing with...the part number they reference is for the full sensor with the hoses attached (seems to be out of stock everywhere), but the sensor without the hoses is available. It's right on top of the engine...no reason to think it would be a difficult job:
Ford Maverick Customer Satisfaction Program 24N04 - What to replace? 1747149867247-w0

Now I'm curious as to why my old dealer service department didn't know about this TSB when I had the truck there last year...

You have to tap them on shoulder, say “Hey, what about this?”. They not gonna worry about it jf no CEL comes on.

Customer Service notices treated differently from recall. Recall is mandatory, customer services aspects only if it’s bad.

I guess that makes sense. Still a very annoying problem to have. Guess I'll call around to the various other dealers and see if they'll work with me. The CEL isn't on all the time, which would make it tough to replicate at a shop because it could very well turn itself off by the time I got there.

At least I know what to replace if I can't avoid that "scan fee."

Not to dig up an old thread, but wanted to close the loop in case anyone else has this issue and is out of warranty. I finally got around to fixing it a couple weeks ago.

If you look at the TSB, it says the part to replace is LX6Z-9J433-A. This appears to be both the JX7A sesnsor I pictured above, plus the bracket it sits on and the two hoses that feed into it. It's about twice the price (or more!) of the part that I wound up ordering, which was just the sensor.

I didn't see any reason to replace the hoses/bracket if it's just the sensor that is malfunctioning, so
I googled part no. JX7A-5L200-AD and found one on Amazon for $45. It says it's only for F-150s and Broncos, but everything looked exactly the same as the one in the Maverick. I figured I'd just return it if it didn't look correct when it arrived.

Anyway, got the part overnight, it was exactly the same. Unbolted the old one, pushed off the hoses, put the new one in its place. Took all of 2 minutes. Cleared the codes and it has not come back...this was about 3 weeks ago. Truck seems to be running much better, but that all might be in my head...

Either way, if you're plauged with the P0402 code give it a shot with part JX7A-5L200-AD.

This is why we have this forum. Members find fixes that are cost effective, so we don't get ripped off from dealers replacing things we really don't need. I thank you for this message informing us.

Make sure you call that old dealer back, remind the service guy about the case - if he doesn't remember never mind.
If he does, little face rub that you followed TSB and it worked.
