I'm not sure that is true anymore for vehicle donations worth more than $500. A lot of the major car-donation charities issue a Form 1098-C that reports the gross proceeds of selling your vehicle. You have to attach that to your Form 8283 when you file for your deduction.In my experience dealing with charity donation they will ask you what you think it's worth, and write a receipt for whatever you say.
There may be ways to get around these rules. I don' t know. But the general process is described on this website and in this IRS publication.
