Mine brakes and holds my set speed when I go down hill with cruise control active.Cruise control does not use the brakes. The only things it can do is reduce fuel to the engine and downshift the transmission.

FWIW, I think my Maverick allows entirely too much downhill acceleration before downshifting, and doesn't downshift enough - but the system does react, and I assume it is normal.
Rpm’s don’t climb, no downshifts unless the grade is really steep.
So,
Mine uses the brakes. I can even feel a forward weight shift as is normal when braking.
Maybe it’s a Lariat thing I don’t know.
