My 23 XLT AWD actually accelerates down medium and steep hills on cruise control. Is this normal?

My 2024 AWD Lariat Ecoboost does not.
I can even slow down with the cruise control.
I feel the brakes take hold on long descents.
I’m not using hill hold.
It may be a setting, not sure.
Get into the manual.

I can start down at 65 mph and hold or tap/hold the CC down to 55 mph and it smoothly brakes, slows down to that newly set speed.

It's normal for the speed to go up a couple MPH in this situation, but after like 3 or 4 MPH the system should engage the brakes and bring your speed back down.

In my 25 Tremor, the cruise control absolutely uses the foot brake on its own and I love it. If you wish to add a little but more rpms for some supplemental engine braking, go to tow/haul mode for the length of the hill. Then go back to what ever mode you usually use at the bottom :)

Cruise control does not use the brakes. The only things it can do is reduce fuel to the engine and downshift the transmission.

FWIW, I think my Maverick allows entirely too much downhill acceleration before downshifting, and doesn't downshift enough - but the system does react, and I assume it is normal.

I wonder if this is related that not all the '23 EB's have the electronic brake boost, like my '24 Lariat has? Maybe with that feature it has better tie-in with the cruise control?

Thanks so far for all your replies. I find 70 mph down a medium hill with the control set at 55 unacceptable.
Agreed. When you get a chance, select tow/haul mode before you head downhill, it does a better job of down-shifting on its' own.

This is either not true for the 25 Tremor or Co-Pilot 360 but it absolutely uses the foot brake on its own. I can see the brake lights come on when I come up on slow traffic or a speed zone or a corner when using the cruise control, and I can feel the vibration on the long hills when the brakes are getting hot.

Could be. I would expect CP360 to be able to do that, and if it did apply the brakes, it'd be prudent to illuminate the brake lights. Probably not Tremor-related at all.

I have a 25 Hybrid and it's the first vehicle that I have every owned where the cruise control is rock solid on whatever speed I set. I assume it's related to the electric motor/generator torque being applied when needed at highway speeds. If I set it at 70 or 75 and go up or down overpasses, it doesn't drop or speed up even 1 MPH from the set speed.

I appreciate the advice. I'll try it. I don't feel I should have to do that.

Maybe Carlitos is right and the whole 'cruise control applying the brakes' only applies to Co-Pilot 360. If so, then that's kind of silly that it did not come with all of them that have cruise control :-(

Same, the hybrid is magical keeping speed downhill even with cruise off.

But it's 100% different powertrain than the Ecoboosts.

If you don't have the high end box checked for your model for Self driving (copilot 360 or whatever they call it for your model year).
The poor peoples version does not brake during CC.

If you use Eco or Regular drive modes, the downshifts are Very lazy, that is, it will 'coast in Neutral' as its shifting down...so this adds quite a bit of extra speed as its downshifting. Then it realizes its way over the set limit, and tries to do another downshift, and while doing so is once again is 'coasting in N' and adding even more speed...then it finally shifts, and the engine Revs.
It may only be a second or so, but its enough time to noticeably increase in speed as it makes its Super lethargic downshifts.

You're better off releasing CC on a long decel, put it into the gear you want manually. So it doesn't 'run away'.
Its poor shift tuning, if you are in Sport/Tow/or Lobo mode, it will much better hold the gear, and/or Shift much quicker and usually hold the CC speed better.

Just use Manual Mode and paddles to keep it in the gear you need it in if you are driving in the mountains.
Don't be that guy Cooking the brakes instead of adjusting your gears properly for the road you're on.
